The historic part of town was laid out by Prince Oldenburgsky in the early 20th century, and ever since, the colonnade, the grand staircase, the subtropical park and the Gagripsh restaurant have sat in a single walkable cluster — a few minutes on foot from any of the places to stay on Ardzinba Avenue. The seafront empties out in the evening and the beach runs right up to the hotel grounds, so people choose Old Gagra for its architecture and unhurried pace rather than for the nightlife. Minibuses run here from New Gagra, and the trip takes about a quarter of an hour.

A park hotel in Gagra means enclosed green grounds with a pool, a restaurant and, as a rule, direct access to the sea: there's no need to head into town for meals or entertainment. The main cluster of them stretches along Ardzinba Avenue in the historic part, though there are some on the newer side of town as well. The format suits travellers whose holiday happens inside the hotel — with kids, for a couple of weeks, with no plans to go somewhere new every day.

Places with direct beach access can be found on both sides of Gagra — in the historic part, where the pebble shore runs up against the hotel parks, and in the new one, where the beaches are wider and busier. The difference is in the atmosphere: the north is quieter and greener, while further south you get rental stands, cafés and evening life. In July and August a private stretch of shore saves exactly what runs short at the height of the season — time and patience.

Guest houses are New Gagra's private-sector accommodation: leafy courtyards, home cooking and breakfast from the hosts instead of a restaurant and a spa. They sit back in the blocks between Ardzinba Avenue and the sea, so the beach is a five- to ten-minute walk away, and the market and cafés about the same. The most affordable beds in town are here, and it's a sensible choice if you need a room only for sleeping between the sea and day trips around Abkhazia.

New Gagra is the resort end of town to the south: a market, cafés, rental stands, a lively seafront and noticeably more down-to-earth rates than in the historic part. It's a convenient base for anyone who doesn't plan to spend the holiday on hotel grounds — the beach is a couple of minutes away, Old Gagra a quarter of an hour by minibus, and transport to Pitsunda, Lake Ritsa and New Athos leaves from nearby. For the same reason it's a practical option for a trip with kids: everything you need is close at hand.

In July and August the beaches of New Gagra are packed, and a pool on site becomes the deciding argument on a trip with kids — during the day you needn't go down to the sea at all. Options like this come both as boutique hotels with a restaurant and a garden and as private-sector places with a courtyard, a barbecue and board games. Second-line accommodation is usually quieter at night and easier on the budget, and the water is still only a few minutes' walk away.

When the July heat on the coast climbs toward +30 °C and there's no room to move, some guests deliberately head higher up — into the gorges and onto the slopes above town, where it's cooler and quieter and the coastline is visible far to the south. The format here is different: chalets and platform tents with a shower and bathroom inside, terraces with a view, an evening under the stars instead of resort noise. From a place like this you drive down to the sea for the day and come back up to the cool air to sleep.

It's about half an hour's drive from the Psou border crossing to Gagra, and quiet villages line the sea along that stretch: guest houses and small hotels there cost less than in town, and the beaches stay emptier even at peak season. It's an option for anyone arriving by car or planning day trips out and back across Abkhazia — town isn't far, and the border is closer still. The drawback is obvious: there's almost no resort infrastructure, so you'll have to travel into Gagra for cafés and entertainment.
