If you're coming for the museums, choose the blocks between the Admiralty and Nevsky Prospekt: the Hermitage, St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood all end up within walking distance, and you'll barely need the metro — there are few stations in the historic centre, and the hotels here are built for walking.

If you want somewhere quieter and cheaper but just as close, look at Vasilyevsky Island and the Petrogradskaya Side: the Winter Palace is one bridge away.

The most expensive period is the White Nights season, from mid-May to mid-July: rooms in the centre get noticeably pricier, and the best hotels are taken two to three months ahead.

The best value is the velvet season, at the end of August and in September: the weather is still mild, there are fewer tourists and prices sit well below the summer level. Winter is the cheapest time of all, and the best moment for the spa hotels on the gulf.

Within walking distance of Palace Square there are three different tiers. The most expensive are the historic grand hotels on the front row, with views of St. Isaac's and the Moyka; noticeably more affordable are the five-star hotels slightly off the main facades and the boutique hotels in old mansions; lower still are the mini-hotels and furnished rooms in the apartment buildings on that same Nevsky Prospekt.

Within each tier the difference between winter and the White Nights can be one and a half times, so it's worth comparing specific dates — current prices are shown on the cards above.

An overnight stay makes sense if you want to see the Grand Cascade without the crowds: the park opens early, while the coach groups only reach the lower ticket offices by the middle of the morning. The journey from the centre takes between forty minutes and an hour, so a day trip eats up almost the entire day.

The same trick works in Pushkin with the Catherine Palace, where the queue for the Amber Room starts forming first thing in the morning.

The hotels by Pulkovskoye Shosse are a few minutes from the terminal and offer a shuttle, late check-in and early breakfast — with them there's no need to budget for morning traffic. If you'd rather combine the last night with the city, choose hotels near Victory Square: from there it's a straight run to the airport along Moskovsky Prospekt, with a metro station nearby.

From the centre to Pulkovo by taxi in the morning, allow 30–40 minutes with traffic.
