Sector A at the foot of Mount Zelenaya is the five kilometres of difference that decide how your morning goes: you step out of the hotel and onto the slope instead of waiting for a shuttle and queueing for the drag lift. Vesennyaya, Sportivnaya and Olimpiyskaya streets cover the whole range, from upper-category hotels to modest guesthouses whose main argument is that you can walk to the base station. The season here runs from November to May, with the most dependable riding in February and March, so rooms by the mountain get taken early. This is the option for people who came to ride rather than to economise.

A group here for five to seven days usually cares more about a kitchen and a washing machine than about a lobby and a restaurant: groceries from the village, dinner in your own living room, gear drying without a queue. Aparthotels by Mount Zelenaya offer that format a step from the lifts, while apartments on Sovetskaya and Dzerzhinskogo sit in the residential part, which is quieter and noticeably cheaper. Choosing between them means choosing between time and budget: the village is a 10–15 minute ride from Sector A.

The residential part of Sheregesh — Gagarina, Dzerzhinskogo and Sovetskaya streets — is the way to keep what you spend on a bed to a minimum and put the savings into lift passes and rentals. In exchange you'll be setting an alarm: Sector A is about five kilometres away, and public buses and shuttle minivans take 10–15 minutes. This is also where the resort's most affordable accommodation is, from a bed in a shared room to simple guesthouses with a ski storage room and quick check-in. A format for people who only sleep at the hotel.

A hotel room doesn't suit everyone: groups of skiers and snowboarders who come for a week more often take a whole house. Chalets and barnhouses on Klyuchevaya, Stroiteley and Shakhtyorov come with a kitchen, a living room and a private banya, and instead of a noisy corridor you get neighbours you chose yourself. Many have space on the plot for a car and a snowmobile. In high season these are the first to go, so it's worth booking ahead.

If you want quiet, look towards the Chernogoriya cluster and the Mustag sector: the road there runs through pine forest, there aren't many neighbours, and the Mount Zelenaya lifts are five to eight kilometres away. It's a deliberate trade — you give up walking onto the slope straight from your door, and you get taiga outside the window and evenings without the village's background hum. Suits groups and families with their own car; without one, logistics will become the main theme of the trip.

After a day on the slope, a banya in Sheregesh isn't a spa treatment but a way to get your back and legs back, which is why both the large complexes by Mount Zelenaya and private houses have one. In the first case that means a steam room with a pool on the hotel grounds; in the second, a separate bathhouse in the yard, fired up for your arrival. When booking, check whether the banya is included in the rate or charged by the hour — with private properties it's more often the latter.

A glamping dome is the most Sheregesh way to spend the night: a panoramic window onto the taiga, a wood stove inside and no neighbours through the wall. These stand well away from the lifts, in the wooded part around Grozovaya and Shakhtyorov, so you need a car or a transfer to reach the slope. People usually take them for two or three nights, and more often as couples than as a big group — for the view and the quiet rather than the service.

With children in Sheregesh, what decides things is less the distance to the slope than having a plan for the day when the snow comes down in sheets or a child runs out of energy. Look for a pool, a banya complex, board games and equipment rental on site — with that set, a break from riding stops being a problem. The learning slopes and children's lifts are concentrated in Sector A, and accommodation with a pool can be found both right by the mountain and away from the village.

From May to October, Sheregesh turns into a different resort: the winter rush is gone and accommodation goes for noticeably less than at the height of the riding season. This is where people set out to trek up Mount Mustag and to the Saga waterfall, and to ride Mountain Shoria on horseback and by bike, so what you want from a place is a terrace, a barbecue and easy access to the trails. In summer it makes more sense to take a cottage or a guest house in the wooded part than a room by the lifts, which run at half strength in the off-season anyway.
