Hotels in Lermontov

The whole centre of Lermontov fits into a fifteen-minute walk: the town hall, the shops, a small market and the minibus stops for Pyatigorsk and Zheleznovodsk all sit within one circle. You will find both the familiar hotel format — 24-hour reception, restaurant and a hot breakfast — and ordinary self-contained flats rented out by the night. That works well if you have come for a night or two on business, or if you use the town as a quiet base and only come back here to sleep.

If the trip runs longer than a couple of nights — a course of treatments at a nearby sanatorium, a family holiday or remote work — a kitchen changes the whole rhythm: you can have breakfast at home instead of working around café opening hours. These places sit on the road out of Lermontov towards Pyatigorsk and Zheleznovodsk, so you reach the pump rooms and treatment centres faster and come back in the evening to somewhere without the resort crowds. You will need a car or a minibus, but in return you get quiet streets, shops nearby and no paying for services you would not use anyway.

Beshtau is the highest peak of the Caucasian Mineral Waters at 1,401 metres, and it is only a few kilometres from Lermontov to its base: the trails are well worn, and the Second Athos Monastery stands at the start of the route. Sleeping right by the mountain is easier than driving over from Pyatigorsk in the morning — you set off in the cool of the day and are back by lunchtime. The best window for the climb is May through September; in winter the trails ice over, so plan the ascent with a guide.

Lermontov itself has no pump rooms or balneological clinics — people go to Zheleznovodsk, Pyatigorsk, Yessentuki and Kislovodsk for mineral water and treatments, and each of them is under an hour away. But if you want the pool, sauna and spa right in the hotel rather than by appointment at a sanatorium, there are options closer to Pyatigorsk, next to the resort's medical facilities. It suits people who are coming for the waters but are not ready for the sanatorium routine of scheduled treatments and a shared dining room.

Around Lermontov there are dacha settlements, hamlets and the slopes of Beshtau, where instead of neighbours through the wall you get your own yard, a barbecue and a banya. This format appeals to those travelling with children or a pet, arriving by car and wanting quiet after a day at the spa towns. Without a car it is awkward: you have to drive to the shops and the bus stops, but in the evening it is completely still.
