Hostels in Murmansk

Murmansk has two "hearts". The first is the compact center around Prospekt Lenina. This is where the infrastructure lives: the train station, Pyat Uglov Square, the Lenin nuclear icebreaker museum, and most of the hotels.

The second "heart" is the Kola tundra, 40–60 km from the city. You go there for the dark, light-pollution-free sky. Decide first what you came for — then pick your hotel around that goal.

The city's "golden square" is the blocks between Prospekt Lenina and the streets Polyarnye Zori and Shmidta. From here you can walk to the Lenin icebreaker museum at the sea terminal, to the Murmansk Regional Museum, and to the main departure points for Teriberka tours. A car in the center is more of a burden than a help because of the parking shortage — and besides, the train station is a 5–10 minute walk away.

The four-star Meridian Congress Hotel on Vorovskogo Street sits on the central square, 300 meters from the train station. Prices start from 13,500 ₽ per night. The hotel has a restaurant and a spa, plus 67 m² two-room apartments that work well for a family or a business trip.

The best balance of price and comfort is Cosmos Murmansk on Knipovicha Street. Prices start from 6,500 ₽. It's one of the most affordable four-star options in the city. About a kilometer's walk from the central square.

A solid middle ground is Rooms & Breakfast on Polyarnye Zori. Prices from 5,400 ₽. Breakfast included.

For a true budget option, there's Yagel Hostel on Burkova Street. Prices per bed start at 1,050 ₽. The hostel is a 15-minute walk from the train station, which is handy for early-morning departures to the coast.

To see the northern lights in their full glory, you need to get away from the city glow. The best locations are 40–60 km from Murmansk — along the road to Teriberka and out along the Verkhnetulomskoe highway. The bases here sit right on the edge of the tundra and operate year-round, but the peak season runs December–February. That's when the lights show up most often. We recommend booking accommodation 1.5–2 months in advance.

Aurora Village is located at the 49th kilometer of the Serebryanskoe highway — the most affordable option in this category, with rooms from 9,600 ₽ per night. The base sits right on the road to Teriberka. Handy if you're planning to combine aurora-watching with a trip to the sea.

Lapland Village is in Kildinstroy — roughly 25 km from Murmansk. A three-star hotel, with rates starting at 13,225 ₽. Works well for both an aurora trip and a family getaway.

If you're behind the wheel or planning to drive out to the Barents Sea in the morning, there's no reason to overpay for a stay in the center. The apart-hotels and hotels along Kolsky Prospekt line the exit onto the R-21 highway. You can reach the city center in 15–20 minutes by car, parking is free, and the junction with the Teriberka road is only a few minutes away.

Murmansk Discovery Center sits at Kolsky Prospekt 176. Prices start from 3,660 ₽ per night. It's a guest house with its own tour desk. A good fit if you plan to book a trip to Teriberka or the Khibiny through them and want to stay with your guide throughout the day.
