Another plus: some guest houses along the avenue run their own tour service and drive guests out to the sea and into the Khibiny Mountains themselves.
If Murmansk is just a staging post for you before heading out to the coast, there is no reason to overpay for a room. Hostels and small hotels a fifteen-minute walk from the railway station charge little, take guests in at any hour of the day or night and store luggage while you walk around the city. The format suits people arriving on the night train from Saint Petersburg and people leaving for Teriberka at first light equally well.
City light pollution washes the aurora out, so people drive into the tundra to find it — along the road to Teriberka and the Serebryansky and Verkhnetulomsky highways, a few dozen kilometers out of town. The lodges here sit on the edge of the tundra and stay open year-round, but the peak season runs from December to February, when the sky is at its darkest and displays happen most often. Places for those dates are taken a month and a half to two months ahead, so book well in advance and allow several nights in a row for the hunt.
Dolina Uyuta (the Valley of Comfort) is a ski stadium and a network of trails a few kilometers from the center, and every spring it hosts the Festival of the North with its legendary ski marathon. On competition days it is simplest to stay right here: the start areas are a short walk away, and the lodges rent out gear and have somewhere to dry your kit. The rest of the year it is a quiet, green edge of town for walks and ski weekends, and finding a place to stay is noticeably easier.
