For a short city itinerary — the center, the blocks between Lenin Avenue, Polyarnye Zori Street and Shmidta Street. From there it is a walk to the icebreaker Lenin, the railway and sea terminals and the main restaurants. If you have come by car, look toward Kolsky Prospekt: it is quieter and cheaper, and the run out to Teriberka is shorter.
Light pollution gets in the way inside the city, so people go a few dozen kilometers out for the aurora — to the lodges along the R-21 Kola highway and the Serebryansky and Verkhnetulomsky roads. They stand on the edge of the tundra, where there are no city lights, and open sky is a couple of steps from the porch. Activity peaks from December to February, and rooms for those dates are booked a month and a half to two months ahead.
No, there are no five-star hotels in the city. The highest category available is four stars: several such hotels operate in the center and by the main square, with a restaurant, spa and conference rooms. If you want something closer to premium, take a look at the higher-category countryside lodges in the Kolsky District.
The range is wide: a hostel bed near the station costs several times less than a room in a four-star hotel, while the countryside aurora lodges are the priciest segment in the city. In winter, at the height of the aurora hunt, and during the Festival of the North, rates run noticeably higher than in the shoulder season. In summer people head to Teriberka and the tundra, but keep the polar day in mind: from mid-May to the end of July the sun does not set, and sleeping well without blackout curtains is hard.
