Short-term apartment rentals in Nizhny Novgorod
Nizhny Novgorod offers a choice unusual for Russia: the Upper city or the Lower city. The Oka River splits it in two, and the bank you pick decides where you'll start your day — by the Kremlin or by Moskovsky railway station.
The city has 403 hotels and guesthouses — among them you'll find an option for any preference. You might book a guesthouse near the embankment from 448 ₽ a night, or pick a panoramic suite instead.

Which Bank of Nizhny Novgorod to Pick: the Kremlin or the Strelka?
The city is laid out across the Dyatlovy Hills, with sweeping views over the Volga. The Oka River cuts it in half: an Upper part and a Lower part. The upper part holds the pedestrian tourist quarters, the Kremlin and Bolshaya Pokrovskaya street; the lower part is home to the Strelka, Moskovsky railway station and the Nizhny Novgorod Fair. Visitors in the upper district tend to take their time and walk out toward the famous Chkalov Staircase. In the lower part, travelers more often head for the trains. Before booking, decide what matters more to you: proximity to the views over the Volga, or the convenience of transport hubs and quick access to the business venues.
| Part of the city | Price for a 4★, from | Trip scenario | Anchor points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upper | 8,500 ₽ | Walks, museums, views | Kremlin, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, Chkalov Staircase |
| Lower | 5,830 ₽ (3★) | Forum, railway station, fair | Strelka, Moskovskaya metro |
| Across the Volga (Bor) | 4,200 ₽ | Quiet by the water and the cable car | Cable car, left bank |
Upper Part: the Kremlin, Pokrovskaya, the Upper Volga Embankment
The hillside blocks spread out in front of the Chkalov Staircase and the Kremlin wall. From here the main museums and viewing platforms over the Volga are a short 5–10 minute walk away. The same goes for Bolshaya Pokrovskaya. The area is packed with tourist hotels, and most listings tagged "by the Kremlin" really do live up to the label.
- Oktyabrskaya — a 4-star hotel right on the upper embankment, from 8,500 ₽.
- Mercure Nizhny Novgorod Center — a 4-star hotel from an international brand a hundred meters from the center, from 11,900 ₽.
- Apart Kremlyovsky — an aparthotel at the foot of the Kremlin walls, from 12,800 ₽.
Lower Part: the Strelka, Kanavinsky, Moskovsky Railway Station
This is the left bank of the Oka. The flat ground sits conveniently next to the railway station and the Nizhny Novgorod Fair. The area suits anyone who's come for forums, trade fairs, or simply needs a handy transit point. From Moskovskaya metro station to the Kremlin takes 10–15 minutes across the Kanavinsky Bridge. The bigger draw, though, is that rooms here are noticeably cheaper than in the upper part of the city.
- Botanika Loft — a 3-star loft a step from the Strelka, from 5,830 ₽.
- Bugrov Hostel — a hostel five hundred meters from the Strelka and the stadium, with a bed from 1,100 ₽.
Merchant Mansions and Art Hotels on Rozhdestvenskaya and Alekseyevskaya
If choosing a place to stay isn't about "where" but about "in what" you want to soak up the atmosphere, the upper part of the city offers a one-of-a-kind experience. Alekseyevskaya and Rozhdestvenskaya are two 19th-century merchant streets, a block off Bolshaya Pokrovskaya. Here you'll find houses with original stucco, cozy courtyards with cafes, and small hotels rebuilt from old merchant estates. A stay in a historic Nizhny Novgorod building turns out to be a more interesting alternative to a standard chain hotel — and it doesn't take a much bigger budget either.
- Boutique Hotel Usadba E. Ermolaevoy — a 3-star boutique hotel in a restored merchant estate on Alekseyevskaya, from 9,775 ₽.
- Rozhdestvensky Dvorik — a 4-star hotel in a courtyard on Rozhdestvenskaya, from 10,000 ₽.
From here it's a seven-minute walk to Bolshaya Pokrovskaya and a quarter of an hour to the Kremlin. Mornings at a hotel like this start with a walk through the old town.
Where to Stay Across the Volga and Out of Town: Bor, Zelyony Gorod, the Grebnoy Canal
If you've come for quiet by the river, it's worth heading outside the city and coming back to the center for day trips. Bor itself is linked to the city by a cable car: in just 12 minutes you cross 3.6 km over the Volga. The Grebnoy Canal and the Zelyony Gorod cottage settlement already belong to the wider agglomeration, but both are a thirty-minute drive from the Kremlin.
- Magellan House — a 4-star hotel in Bor, a step from the cable car, from 4,200 ₽.
- Ecopark on the Grebnoy Canal — a 5-star hotel by the water without leaving the city, from 7,700 ₽.

Frequently Asked Questions
Go for the upper part of the city — the Kremlin area, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, or the Upper Volga Embankment. That way all the main sights are within walking distance, and you won't lose an hour just getting to the embankment for a stroll.
If your budget is tight, look at guesthouses and mini-hotels on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya and the Lower Volga Embankment. You can stay a step from the Kremlin for 1,200–1,700 ₽.
By metro the trip takes about 10–15 minutes: change at Moskovskaya and ride to Gorkovskaya.
By taxi across the Kanavinsky Bridge you'll get there in 15–25 minutes, depending on traffic.
On foot, across the bridge and up the Chkalov Staircase, the walk takes about an hour — that's with stops to take in the views.
It's worth staying in Bor if quiet, riverside walks, and a panorama of the city from the opposite bank matter to you.
The cable car runs every five minutes, and the ride takes 12 minutes. From the upper station to the Kremlin is a 15-minute walk, or one stop on surface transit.
Mind the schedule, though: the cable car doesn't run at night, and the last cabin leaves in the evening.
The hardest time to find a free room is high season — from late May through September — and over the New Year holidays.
The hotel stock comes under extra pressure during the May–June CIPR forum (Center for Information Technologies and Industrial Robotics): hotels near the Strelka and in the upper city are booked weeks in advance.
