Affordable nightly stays in Nizhny Novgorod

The city is laid out across the Dyatlovy Hills, with sweeping views over the Volga. The Oka River cuts it in half: an Upper part and a Lower part. The upper part holds the pedestrian tourist quarters, the Kremlin and Bolshaya Pokrovskaya street; the lower part is home to the Strelka, Moskovsky railway station and the Nizhny Novgorod Fair. Visitors in the upper district tend to take their time and walk out toward the famous Chkalov Staircase. In the lower part, travelers more often head for the trains. Before booking, decide what matters more to you: proximity to the views over the Volga, or the convenience of transport hubs and quick access to the business venues.

Upper Part: the Kremlin, Pokrovskaya, the Upper Volga Embankment

The hillside blocks spread out in front of the Chkalov Staircase and the Kremlin wall. From here the main museums and viewing platforms over the Volga are a short 5–10 minute walk away. The same goes for Bolshaya Pokrovskaya. The area is packed with tourist hotels, and most listings tagged "by the Kremlin" really do live up to the label.

Lower Part: the Strelka, Kanavinsky, Moskovsky Railway Station

This is the left bank of the Oka. The flat ground sits conveniently next to the railway station and the Nizhny Novgorod Fair. The area suits anyone who's come for forums, trade fairs, or simply needs a handy transit point. From Moskovskaya metro station to the Kremlin takes 10–15 minutes across the Kanavinsky Bridge. The bigger draw, though, is that rooms here are noticeably cheaper than in the upper part of the city.

If choosing a place to stay isn't about "where" but about "in what" you want to soak up the atmosphere, the upper part of the city offers a one-of-a-kind experience. Alekseyevskaya and Rozhdestvenskaya are two 19th-century merchant streets, a block off Bolshaya Pokrovskaya. Here you'll find houses with original stucco, cozy courtyards with cafes, and small hotels rebuilt from old merchant estates. A stay in a historic Nizhny Novgorod building turns out to be a more interesting alternative to a standard chain hotel — and it doesn't take a much bigger budget either.

If you've come for quiet by the river, it's worth heading outside the city and coming back to the center for day trips. Bor itself is linked to the city by a cable car: in just 12 minutes you cross 3.6 km over the Volga. The Grebnoy Canal and the Zelyony Gorod cottage settlement already belong to the wider agglomeration, but both are a thirty-minute drive from the Kremlin.
