Smolensk's main tourist district is Leninsky, on the left bank of the Dnieper: Cathedral Hill with the Assumption Cathedral, the surviving towers and wall sections of the fortress, Lopatinsky Garden and the pedestrianized Bolshaya Sovetskaya. If you're coming specifically to see the city, it makes sense to stay here — museums and viewpoints will be within walking distance, and you won't have to cross back over the bridge in the evening. There aren't many hotels in the historic core, so the center gets booked out well in advance for long weekends and the May holidays.

The Lastochka train from Moscow's Belorussky station takes about four hours to Smolensk and arrives on the right bank of the Dnieper, in the Zadneprovsky district. The historic center is a twenty-minute walk from here across the bridge, so staying by the station doesn't cut you off from the sights. The option works especially well if you're in town for a single night or catching an early train out — the platform is a couple of minutes away, rather than a taxi ride back across the river.

Smolensk sits on the M1 highway roughly halfway between Moscow and Minsk, which makes it the natural overnight stop for anyone driving to Belarus or Kaliningrad. Rather than picking your way into the historic center with its narrow streets and cramped courtyards, look for a place near the city entrances — the northern one, off the Moscow highway, and the western one along Krasninskoye Shosse. Check that there's private parking and a round-the-clock front desk: in the morning you'll be back on the highway in a few minutes, without driving into town.

For a city in central Russia the spa format isn't especially common here, but it does exist — both in Smolensk itself and at countryside complexes out toward the Minsk and Roslavl highways. Such hotels sell you a banya, a pool and quiet rather than sightseeing, so it makes sense to book them for a night or two of rest rather than as a base for exploring the city. In winter they're also a way to stay independent of the weather: walking along the fortress wall in freezing temperatures doesn't last long.

Business Smolensk lives not in the historic core but along Prospekt Stroiteley and in the districts to the south and east of the city — and that's where you'll find hotels with meeting rooms, conference halls and early breakfast. The upside of that location is private parking and an easy run out to the bypass; the downside is that reaching the fortress wall means driving or walking along noisy avenues. If the trip runs into the weekend, pick somewhere with a sauna or a restaurant of its own: there isn't much to walk to in these blocks come evening.

Apartments are the largest segment of short-stay accommodation in Smolensk and the most flexible option for a family or a trip of several days: a kitchen, a washing machine, separate rooms. Most of the listings are in the center — on Bolshaya Sovetskaya, Lenina street and around Gagarin Boulevard — plus in the residential blocks of Korolyovka and Bagrationa, ten minutes by bus from Cathedral Hill. Check how check-in works: in many apartments it's contactless, with a door code, and there'll be no receptionist on site.

The budget segment here rests on guesthouses and small hotels: some sit right on Bolshaya Sovetskaya, a couple of minutes from the fortress wall, others in the residential districts along Rylenkova and Gubenko, with direct transport to the center. Saving money usually means a compact room and breakfast charged separately, but parking and Wi-Fi are there almost everywhere. For a night in transit or a short weekend of sightseeing that's quite enough.
