Hotels in Yaroslavl

Yaroslavl's historic core sits in the bend where the Volga meets the Kotorosl: the Volzhskaya and Kotoroslnaya embankments and Pervomayskaya, Sverdlova and Pushkina streets all fall inside the UNESCO protected zone. From here the Strelka, the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, the Church of Elijah the Prophet and Millennium Park are a 10–15 minute walk away, so you won't need transport at all. This is the best choice for a short two-night trip, when the whole route fits into a single walk. Bear in mind that rooms near the embankment are taken well in advance for the summer cruise season and the New Year holidays.

Among the towns of the Golden Ring, Yaroslavl stands out for its surviving 19th-century merchant and tenement mansions, converted into small hotels. These are intimate houses of a dozen rooms with themed interiors, sometimes with a museum of their own, and almost all of them stand right in the historic centre — on Trefoleva Street and the Volzhskaya and Kotoroslnaya embankments. It's a format for travellers who come for the atmosphere of the old merchant city rather than simply for a bed: some windows look out on the river and the church domes.

Across the Kotorosl, on the left bank, a quieter part of the city begins — Moskovsky Prospekt, Korovniki, Suzdalskoye Shosse. The main advantage for drivers: the exit onto the M8 highway is close by and the hotels have their own parking, while the Strelka is a 15–20 minute walk over the bridge or a couple of bus stops away. Choose this area if you have arrived by car and plan trips out of town, not just walks around the centre.

The Frunzensky and Dzerzhinsky districts lie 4–8 km from the centre, and rates here are noticeably lower than by the embankments. In exchange you'll need to allow 15–30 minutes to reach the Strelka by taxi or public transport, which makes the option especially convenient if you're getting around in your own car. A sensible choice for a long stay, a business trip or an overnight stop en route, when the room is mainly somewhere to sleep.

Rostov Veliky, Uglich, Tutayev, Kostroma and Pereslavl-Zalessky lie 80–150 km from Yaroslavl, so the easiest approach is to book one room for 3–4 nights and make day trips out and back. Hotels near Yaroslavl-Glavny station and the Znamenskaya Tower suit that plan: the bus station, the suburban trains and the M8 exit are all a short hop away. The Lastochka train from Moscow takes about three hours, so it makes sense to spend the first night close to the station and start the route the next morning. This is also where business travellers usually stay.

For one or two nights as a couple it's simpler to take a hotel with breakfast and a front desk, but from three nights, with children or in a group, an apartment works out better: there's a kitchen, a washing machine, and the nightly rate drops on longer stays. In Yaroslavl such options turned up right in the historic quarter — on the Volzhskaya and Kotoroslnaya embankments and on Pervomayskaya Street, within walking distance of the Strelka. A proper breakfast at home and a living room of your own are especially useful if Yaroslavl is your base for trips around the region.

Half an hour's drive from the city a completely different Yaroslavl begins: the museum village of Vyatskoye 30 km to the north-east, Volga villages downstream, country complexes with banya houses and pools. Many visitors deliberately swap a city hotel for a base like this — they come for the weekend with no fixed schedule and head into town for a single day. The format works well for a quiet weekend for two and for a trip with children, but a car here is all but essential.
