A Walking Loop through the Center: From the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery to the Church of Elijah the Prophet
The main sights of Yaroslavl fit within a kilometer and a half.
Start your route at the walls of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery. It was within these walls that the manuscript of “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” was discovered in the 1790s. Climb the belfry — it offers a panorama of the old town.
Just five minutes on foot — and you are on Sovetskaya Square by the Church of Elijah the Prophet. Inside the church, built in 1647, the unique frescoes painted by the Guriy Nikitin workshop (1680–1681) have been preserved — the benchmark of the Yaroslavl school of painting.
Next, head to the Volzhskaya Embankment. Go down to the lower tier by the water and walk to the Strelka. You will be greeted by the cape at the confluence of the Volga and the Kotorosl, the Assumption Cathedral, fountains, and the stele marking the thousandth anniversary of the city.
On the way back, drop in at the “Music and Time” museum — the first private museum of post-Soviet Russia.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Yaroslavl?
Yaroslavl has two distinct tourist seasons:
- In winter, be ready for frosts: the average temperature hovers around −6 °C, and at night, especially in January, it drops to −14 °C. February brings the country’s main Maslenitsa celebrations. The main festivities take place on Sovetskaya Square.
- Summer is the ideal time for river outings. During the day, the air warms up to +22…+23 °C. At this time, boats run along the Volga to the Tolga Monastery, and cruise ships constantly moor at the piers of the River Station.
Bonus: September is the best time for leisurely walks along the embankment. It is still warm (+16 °C), and the city is bathed in golden foliage.
