Choose hotels in central Yaroslavl near the Strelka, merchant mansions, kitchen apartments and Volga countryside estates outside the city.
Anything within a kilometre and a half of the confluence of the Volga and the Kotorosl will do — the Volzhskaya and Kotoroslnaya embankments and Pervomayskaya, Sverdlova and Pushkina streets. Inside that circle there are two- to four-star options as well as apartments and guest houses, so you can find something for almost any budget.
The peak falls in June to August, the Volga cruise season. Prices also rise noticeably over the New Year holidays and on City Day, celebrated on the last Saturday of May; for those dates rooms near the embankment are snapped up two or three months ahead. Two nights are enough for the city itself: the centre and the Strelka on the first day, the Zakotoroslnaya side and the Tolgsky Monastery on the second. If you also want to see Rostov, Uglich or Kostroma, allow 3–4 nights and set aside a day for each neighbouring town.

From three nights, with children or in a group, an apartment works out better — a kitchen, a washing machine and a lower nightly rate on longer stays. Both are available in the very centre and near the railway station.
Yes, if you have a car or are coming for a long stay: a night in the Frunzensky and Dzerzhinsky districts costs appreciably less than by the embankments. But the trip to the Strelka takes 15–30 minutes each way, so on a short weekend break the savings are often eaten up by taxi fares.
