The "Meteor" hydrofoils leave Sortavala port in the morning and the boarding line forms well in advance, so staying in the center makes the most sense: the pier is a 10–15 minute walk away, and the "Lastochka" station is right there too. From a country resort 15 kilometers out you would have to set off before daybreak and drive back along the same road after the trip.

If your plans are the "Ruskeala Express", the "Meteor" to Valaam and a walk around the old town, then no: the retro train departs from the same station where the "Lastochka" arrives, and the port is a fifteen-minute walk away. A car is essential if you have chosen a place in Kirjavalahti, Niemelyanhovi, Lyaskelya or Ryuttyu: those are 10–30 kilometers out and public transport runs rarely.

Peak season is July and August: the air warms to +25…+28 °C and Ladoga to around +21 °C. September brings golden autumn with mushrooms and lingonberries; in winter the snowmobile routes open and the town becomes noticeably calmer. In summer, accommodation and tickets to Valaam and Ruskeala are snapped up in advance, so it is better to book a month ahead.

A comfortable minimum is 2–3 nights: one day for the "Ruskeala Express" and the Marble Canyon, one for the "Meteor" to Valaam Monastery, and one for the old town, Vakkosalmi Park and the Church of St. John the Baptist. If you want to see the skerries and swim in Ladoga, add another night at a place by the water.
