Anyone looking for quiet not far from the center will suit the Voroshilovsky district, and for nature it's worth heading to the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain.
Mid-May through mid-September is the most comfortable stretch. July and August can bring punishing heat, so air conditioning in the room is a must at that time, and in the floodplain there are midges on top of it. By October it's already cool, and the first snow can fall in November.
A city hotel makes sense if the trip is short and built around Mamayev Kurgan, the museums and the embankment: getting around Volgograd is slow, and it's better to stay near your route.
