Look for a room within a kilometer of Kremlin Square — on Lenina, Lermontova, Mira and Oktyabrskaya streets, or on Torgovaya Square. From there the cathedral, the Lace Museum and Peter the Great's House are five to fifteen minutes' walk away. Suitable options exist among both three-star hotels and boutique hotels.

It is, if you want quiet and views: from 6th Army Embankment St. Sophia Cathedral looks more impressive than it does close up. Kremlin Square is ten to fifteen minutes' walk from Zarechye across Oktyabrsky Bridge. Guest houses and apartments across the river work out cheaper than boutique hotels in the center.

The spread is narrow for a regional capital: cheapest are the small hotels with no breakfast and no front desk; the middle tier is three-star hotels in the center and apartments with a kitchen; most expensive are the suites in the merchant boutique hotels. A hotel on the outskirts comes out only slightly cheaper than the same one in the center, so there's little sense in going far to save. Rates rise noticeably over the New Year holidays and on city festival days.

The top tier is four-star boutique hotels in restored 19th-century merchant mansions: they hold few rooms, and the interiors were assembled around the history of the particular house. Alongside them stands a spa hotel with a pool and a gym. There are no chain grand hotels in the city, and that is part of the local charm.

Ferapontovo and Kirillov are more than a hundred kilometers away one way, so it's easier to set off early in the morning while it's still dark. Choose a hotel with its own parking, and check when booking whether you can have breakfast earlier than usual or take it with you.
