Astrakhan is best seen on foot: it takes about fifteen unhurried minutes to walk from the white stone kremlin walls to Bratsky Garden, Swan Lake and the fish stalls of Selenskiye Isady. The blocks around Kremlyovskaya and Henri Barbusse streets suit travellers who come for a weekend and don't want to spend half of it getting around. In the evening it's an easy stroll to the pedestrian stretch of Fioletova Street, and in the morning you reach your first tour without changing transport.

Krasnaya Naberezhnaya is a promenade with water below the windows, benches and lights in the evening — and it is still the historic centre. People book here when they want a view from the room and a walk before bed, not just proximity to the museums. In summer the embankment pays off twice over: Astrakhan's heat is far easier to bear near the water.

In July and August the steppe heat settles over the city and walking after midday becomes almost impossible. A pool or a sauna turns a hotel from a place to sleep into part of the holiday: the day splits in two, and you head back out for a walk in the cooler evening. In winter those same spa areas are a refuge from the damp wind off the water, and the hotel restaurants save you the search for dinner.

Leninsky and Kirovsky are ordinary residential districts a fifteen- to twenty-five-minute walk from the kremlin: shops on the corner, quiet courtyards, none of the tourist buzz. It's a sensible choice for a business trip or a week-long stay, when quiet and a modest bill matter more than the view from the window. The centre is within walking distance, or a couple of stops away by bus.

For anything longer than a couple of nights, a flat with a kitchen and a washing machine beats a hotel room: breakfast at home, laundry done, no hunting for a café in the evening. In Astrakhan apartments are run as whole networks, with addresses spread from the centre out to Savushkina, Latysheva and Arshanskiy, so you pick the neighbourhood to fit the trip rather than the other way round. Many of them stand half an hour's walk from the kremlin, so saving money doesn't turn into a long commute. It suits travellers who spend the whole day out and come back to the room only to sleep.

Kustodiev Airport sits south of the city, off Aeroportovskoye Shosse, about half an hour from the kremlin when the traffic is light. Staying here is a matter of logistics: an early departure, a late arrival, an overnight connection — the trips where you'd rather not get up before dawn. The same reasoning applies near the railway station if you're passing through and have no time for sightseeing.

The second kind of trip to Astrakhan starts at the airport and ends tens of kilometres to the south, where the Volga breaks into channels and spills out into the shallows of the Caspian. Lodges around Kamyzyak and out in the delta work as packages: a room, a boat, a guide and meals, and the stay usually stretches to a week. The peak falls in the spring and autumn fishing seasons, and places for those months go early — if you also want to see the kremlin, split the trip into two stays rather than driving back and forth each day.

Not every trip into the delta is about fishing: countryside park hotels win on grounds, shade, a pool and quiet, and a boat here can be taken out purely for the ride. In July and August people come to watch the lotus fields bloom — a sight worth enduring the hottest weeks of the year for. The format suits families and groups who want water outside the window and a slow day rather than a city.
