The historic center of Dzerzhinsk is a single coherent ensemble of Stalinist architecture around Lenin Square: wide avenues, Mira and Pobedy boulevards lined with lime trees and benches, and the central park with its Ferris wheel. From here it's a walk to the city administration, the courts and regional agencies, and about fifteen minutes through the park to the train station. This is the area for people who came on business, want to manage without transport, and like the idea of an evening stroll.

The western side of the city — Tsiolkovsky Avenue, Krasnoarmeyskaya and Rudolfa Udrisa streets — runs right up against the chemical industrial zone: SIBUR-Neftekhim, Sintez-OKA, Korund and the Sverdlov plant are all a few minutes away by car, while the historic center is about fifteen minutes by bus. It's a working district, but a lived-in one: shops, canteens and tire services are close at hand, and although you can hear the industrial zone, the neighborhood itself stays quiet. A good fit for anyone in town for a shift or a commissioning job who values a short trip to the factory gate.

The station sits on Chkalov Avenue, and this is the most practical address if Dzerzhinsk is your base for trips into Nizhny Novgorod: the Lastochka express reaches Moskovsky station in a little over twenty minutes, and the regular commuter train takes about an hour. Rooms here cost noticeably less than in Nizhny Novgorod, and Lenin Square and the central park are a quarter of an hour away on foot through the park. It also suits anyone arriving by train late in the evening who would rather not go looking for transport.

The catalogue holds more daily rental apartments in Dzerzhinsk than conventional hotels, and for a trip longer than three or four nights they usually work out cheaper: the nightly rate drops noticeably on longer bookings. Apartments come with a kitchen, a washing machine and a desk — after a shift it's easier to cook dinner at home than to hunt for a café that's still open. Most of them are in the center, along the boulevards and Tsiolkovsky Avenue, so you can pick the area to match wherever you need to be each day.

The cheapest end of the market in the city belongs to compact guest houses and mini-hotels: a shower, a bed, a kettle, round-the-clock check-in and registration paperwork — no frills, but no overpaying either. Addresses like these are scattered all over Dzerzhinsk, from the streets near the center to the Oka embankment, so it's worth choosing by where you have to be in the morning. The format works for rotational workers and for drivers passing through who simply need a good night's sleep.

The M-7 Volga federal highway, running Moscow — Nizhny Novgorod — Kazan, passes along the northern edge of Dzerzhinsk, and the Igumnovskoye and Moskovskoye highways join it right by the exit. This is an overnight stop in transit rather than a tourist stay: parking for trucks and cars, check-in at any hour, and a bare minimum of amenities in the room, so you can get back on the road in the morning. It's more than ten kilometers to the city center from here, which is why the motels also draw business travelers working in the industrial zone.

The south of Dzerzhinsk opens onto the Oka: a pine forest at Zhelnino, the city beach on the Oka embankment, quiet in place of Stalinist avenues — people come here for a family weekend, not for work. Country complexes with barbecue areas, ponds and playgrounds sit side by side with conventional hotels overlooking the river. Keep one detail in mind: taxis are scarce out here and buses run rarely, so without your own car it's better to arrange transfers in advance — getting back into town in the evening can be difficult.
