Just 40 km separates Nizhny Novgorod from Dzerzhinsk, a city with character. Lenin Avenue: a walk through Stalinist Dzerzhinsk
Dzerzhinsk is an example of a city built “from scratch” around chemical plants. It was granted city status in 1930 and developed into a cohesive architectural ensemble from the 1930–1950 period.
The route begins at Dzerzhinsky Square, home to a pleasant park with a monument to the city’s founder. From here, Lenin Avenue leads to the famous “collective farm house” with 17 entrances. Just a couple of blocks away, you will see the “house with a spire”—an imposing architectural landmark at the intersection of Chkalov and Mayakovsky avenues.
The walk takes about one and a half to two hours and ends at the Palace of Culture of Chemical Workers. Built in 1958 in the Stalinist neoclassical style, the building remains the city’s main cultural venue for public events.
Along the way, stop by the Dzerzhinsk Museum of Local History. It opened in November 1932 and has a collection of more than 40 000 items. The exhibits include objects illustrating everyday life in the villages of Rastyapino and Chyornoye, as well as materials on the history of the local chemical industry.
For a short family break, you can visit the children’s park on Lenin Square or the nearby puppet theatre.
The Shukhov Tower on the Oka: 128 metres and a pine-covered riverbank
The main trip outside the city is to the famous hyperboloid tower designed by engineer Vladimir Shukhov, located between Dzerzhinsk and Bogorodsk. This 128-metre steel power transmission tower, built in the late 1920s, is an engineering masterpiece and a cultural heritage site. Today, it is one of only two surviving tall Shukhov towers in Russia.
How to visit:
- Opening hours: Mon–Thu from 8:00 to 21:00, Fri–Sun from 8:00 to 22:00.
- Illumination: on weekends, the tower is dramatically illuminated from 20:00 until midnight.
- Getting there: there is no public transport to the tower itself, so the easiest option is to take a taxi from central Dzerzhinsk (the journey takes about 30 minutes).
