If you're coming to Gagra for the postcard views — the colonnade, the grand staircase and the 1902 Gagripsh restaurant — pick lodging within walking distance of the central stretch of Ardzinba Avenue.
The colonnade, the park and the Gagripsh restaurant sit in a single pedestrian cluster. From any hotel next to one of these landmarks you can easily walk to the other two. From New Gagra you can get here in 15–20 minutes by marshrutka. If your main goal is to admire the old architecture and stroll around in the morning before the beaches open, this is the part of town to stay in.
In July and August the beaches of New Gagra are packed, so some guests deliberately head uphill. Mount Mamzyshkha rises 1,873 m above sea level. On its slopes you'll find viewpoints from which the coast is visible all the way from Gagra to Pitsunda.
It's an ideal choice for anyone who prefers mountain coolness to the +30 °C July heat and quiet to resort noise. You can always drive down to the sea for the day.
If the sea is still the priority, look at the guest houses closer to the promenade. Poseidon from 4,500 ₽ is a typical example of this kind of stay in New Gagra: close to the sea, inexpensive, with no extra infrastructure, but with home cooking and breakfasts prepared by the hosts.

The two parts of the city are linked by marshrutkas, and the ride from one to the other takes only about 15 minutes.
Park-hotels have their own fenced grounds, a pool, a restaurant and usually direct access to the sea. The main cluster of such hotels is on Ardzinba Avenue. Guest houses belong to the private sector. They tend to have cozy courtyards and home cooking, and the beach is 5–10 minutes away on foot. At the same time, there are no private grounds or spa services. Pick a park-hotel if you want to spend your holiday on its grounds and not step outside the gates. A guest house suits you if you plan to follow the rhythm of the city and save money.
The swimming season runs from June to September. July and August are the peak, when the sea is at its warmest, tourist numbers are high, and accommodation rates are at their highest. May and October are the shoulder season: prices are pleasant, everything around is either green or golden, but the weather isn't always suitable for swimming. September is often picked as a compromise: the sea is still warm, schoolchildren have gone home, and accommodation costs less than in July.
Russian citizens don't need an international passport — at the Psou checkpoint a domestic Russian passport is enough. The rules are occasionally updated, so before your trip it's worth checking the current requirements on the border service websites.
The nearest airport is Sochi (Adler), about 40 km from Gagra. From the airport or Adler railway station you can reach the Psou checkpoint in 10–15 minutes by taxi or local train. After that you cross the border on foot and cover the remaining 25 km or so to Gagra. On the stretch from Psou to your hotel, marshrutkas and taxis are available. Many guest houses and park-hotels in Gagra arrange a transfer on request, which you can set up when you book.
