Choose a hotel within the area bounded by Kirova, Teatralnaya and Suvorova streets. From anywhere in this part of the city, the Tsiolkovsky museum, the Stone Bridge and the old streets are a ten- to twenty-minute walk away, and you'll barely need a car in the centre.
From central Kaluga it's about seventy to eighty kilometres to Nikola-Lenivets and about a hundred to Ethnomir. It makes more sense to sleep right next to where you're going: at the hotel in the art park, in a cottage in the neighbouring village of Zvizzhi, or on the grounds of the ethno-park. During the Archstoyanie festival, the morning drive out of the city easily eats up more time than the programme itself.

The nearest places worth seeing are Obninsk, Tarusa, Borovsk and Kozelsk. Obninsk is served by the Moscow–Kaluga Lastochka trains, Tarusa is easiest to reach via Serpukhov, Borovsk from Balabanovo station, and Kozelsk by bus from the Kaluga bus terminal. After a day out you can come back to your Kaluga hotel for the night.
