Choose hotels in Nizhny Novgorod near the Kremlin and on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, with Volga views or in merchant mansions on Rozhdestvenskaya — from hostels by the station to apartments and stays beyond the Volga.
The upper town on the hills is where you find the Kremlin, the pedestrian Bolshaya Pokrovskaya and the museums you reach from your hotel on foot rather than by car. The viewpoints above the Volga and the descent down the Chkalov Staircase start here as well, so the first day of a trip plans itself. This is the choice if you're in Nizhny for the first time and only for a couple of days: getting to the sights takes almost no travel time. Hotels here are mostly aimed at visitors, and the "near the Kremlin" label is usually honest.
The Dyatlovy Hills drop straight to the water just beyond the Verkhne-Volzhskaya Embankment — this is the view people come to Nizhny for. Places along the top of the ridge keep that panorama in the window, and the walk down to the river on the Chkalov Staircase takes about ten minutes, so you don't have to stay right by the piers to be near the water. At the foot of the slope, closer to the Nizhne-Volzhskaya Embankment, there are rooms facing the Oka and the confluence of the two rivers. Keep in mind that the staircase is long: with a suitcase, the climb back up is easier by transport.
Alekseevskaya and Rozhdestvenskaya are 19th-century merchant streets a block from Bolshaya Pokrovskaya: stucco facades, courtyards with cafes, hotels grown out of old estates and pre-revolutionary apartment houses. This is the choice when it matters not just where you sleep but in what kind of building — a chain room won't give you that. Pokrovskaya is a few minutes' walk away and the Kremlin about a quarter of an hour, so the morning starts right in the old town. And a historic building usually costs no more than an ordinary city hotel of the same level.
The left bank of the Oka is flat Zarechye, home to Moskovsky railway station, the Nizhny Novgorod Fair, the stadium and the Strelka, where the Oka meets the Volga. People stay here for a conference, a trade show or a match, and when they need a convenient base for early trains. The Kremlin is a short metro ride away with a change at Moskovskaya, or a drive across the Kanavinsky Bridge. Rooms in this part of the city cost noticeably less than in the upper town at a comparable level.
In late spring and early summer the city hosts the CIPR forum, and the Nizhny Novgorod Fair runs exhibitions all year round — in weeks like those the available rooms are taken well in advance. For a work trip it helps to have a conference hall, a meeting room and an early breakfast; hotels like that are found both in the upper town and closer to the business districts along Gagarin Avenue. If your dates coincide with a major forum, book several weeks ahead — otherwise the choice shrinks to the outskirts.
Budget places to stay in Nizhny exist right in the center: hostels, small hotels and guest houses sit on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya itself, in the lanes above Rozhdestvenskaya and in Zarechye near the stadium. The format suits travelers who only sleep in the room and spend the day on the embankments, in museums and at the viewpoints. Look for luggage storage and quick check-in — with early trains those matter more than the interior.
Apartments beat a hotel when you're traveling as a group or staying longer than a couple of days: a kitchen, a washing machine and separate rooms instead of one. In the center there are plenty around Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, Ilyinskaya and Zvezdinka — that is, within walking distance of the Kremlin, the theaters and the old town. Check-in is usually self-service with a door code, which is handy after an overnight train, but don't expect a front desk or daily housekeeping here.
For quiet by the water, people head out of Nizhny to the left bank: Bor is linked to the city by a cable car that crosses the Volga in about twelve minutes and departs every few minutes. Grebnoy Kanal and the cottage settlement of Zeleny Gorod formally belong to the wider metro area, but the Kremlin is roughly half an hour away by car. People pick this option for the panorama of the city from the opposite bank, the banya and walks along the shore, treating the center as a place to travel into and back. Note that the cable car doesn't run at night, so late returns have to be planned via the bridge.
Choose the upper town — the area around the Kremlin, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya or the Verkhne-Volzhskaya Embankment. The main sights will be within walking distance and you won't spend an hour traveling just to walk along the embankment. On a tight budget, look at guest houses and small hotels in the same area, in the lanes of the old town.
By metro it's about 10–15 minutes, changing at Moskovskaya station and riding on to Gorkovskaya. A taxi across the Kanavinsky Bridge takes 15–25 minutes depending on traffic, and on foot across the bridge and up the Chkalov Staircase it's roughly an hour with stops for the views.
It is, if quiet, walks by the water and the panorama of the city from the opposite bank matter to you. The cable car runs every few minutes, the ride itself takes about twelve minutes, and it's a quarter of an hour on foot from the upper station to the Kremlin. The main thing is to watch the schedule: the cable car doesn't operate at night.
The tightest stretch runs from late May through September, plus the New Year holidays. The CIPR forum in May and June adds extra pressure: hotels near the Strelka and in the upper town sell out weeks ahead. Check the dates of major events against your trip in advance.
