The towers of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin stand on a steep bank above the confluence of the Oka and the Volga, while the 560 steps of the Chkalov Stairs run down to the Nizhne-Volzhskaya Embankment. After the restoration for the city's 800th anniversary, Strelka became a venue for summer festivals, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya turned into a lively pedestrian corridor, and Zapochainye into a quiet merchant quarter with almost no tourists. People come here to admire the two-level views, listen to music at Strelka, and watch the Volga sunsets.
The Kremlin, the Chkalov Stairs, and Strelka: the main promenade above two rivers
The first day’s route runs between the city’s two levels.
Up top sits the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin with its thirteen 16th-century towers and Minin and Pozharsky Square. From the square stretches the two-kilometre pedestrian Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street. Here you will see Empire-style mansions, sculptures, and street musicians.
Going down, the Chkalov Stairs consist of 560 steps and form a figure-eight. The stairs were opened in 1949.
At the bottom, the Nizhne-Volzhskaya Embankment and Strelka await — the cape where the muddy Oka flows alongside the clear Volga for a long stretch without mixing with it.
You do not have to walk back up on foot: the metro, taxis, and the cable car over the Volga to Bor will get you to the top. The ride takes 12 minutes and covers 3.6 km.
If you are looking for a quiet spot, turn into Zapochainye and stroll along Ilyinskaya Street. This is the merchant quarter where you will hardly meet any tourists.

A festival summer at Strelka and a quiet “velvet” September
Summer is the high season in Nizhny: the temperature averages +23 °C, and the events calendar noticeably changes the rhythm of the city.
For example, in June 2026 Strelka became the centre of the 8th Arts Festival. It opened with Puccini’s opera “La Bohème” at the Opera and Ballet Theatre. In July, VK Fest picked up the baton, and in August “PARI Fest” thundered at Strelka with music and a spectacular air show. At the same time, the “Capital of Sunsets” concert series played along the embankments. And so it goes every summer.
If crowds and high prices put you off, look at September. By day the temperature stays around +17 °C, and the views from the Verkhne-Volzhskaya Embankment are the clearest of the year. This is the perfect time for a full-day trip to Gorodets, Semyonov, or Arzamas.
There is plenty to do in winter too. An ice rink operates in Shveytsariya Park, and a fair runs along Pokrovskaya Street. But be careful: the Chkalov Stairs and the slopes of Zapochainye get slippery in the cold months.

By taxi across the Kanavinsky Bridge you'll get there in 15–25 minutes, depending on traffic.
On foot, across the bridge and up the Chkalov Staircase, the walk takes about an hour — that's with stops to take in the views.
It's worth staying in Bor if quiet, riverside walks, and a panorama of the city from the opposite bank matter to you.
The cable car runs every five minutes, and the ride takes 12 minutes. From the upper station to the Kremlin is a 15-minute walk, or one stop on surface transit.
Mind the schedule, though: the cable car doesn't run at night, and the last cabin leaves in the evening.
The hardest time to find a free room is high season — from late May through September — and over the New Year holidays.
