The hillside blocks spread out in front of the Chkalov Staircase and the Kremlin wall. From here the main museums and viewing platforms over the Volga are a short 5–10 minute walk away. The same goes for Bolshaya Pokrovskaya. The area is packed with tourist hotels, and most listings tagged "by the Kremlin" really do live up to the label.
This is the left bank of the Oka. The flat ground sits conveniently next to the railway station and the Nizhny Novgorod Fair. The area suits anyone who's come for forums, trade fairs, or simply needs a handy transit point. From Moskovskaya metro station to the Kremlin takes 10–15 minutes across the Kanavinsky Bridge. The bigger draw, though, is that rooms here are noticeably cheaper than in the upper part of the city.
If choosing a place to stay isn't about "where" but about "in what" you want to soak up the atmosphere, the upper part of the city offers a one-of-a-kind experience. Alekseyevskaya and Rozhdestvenskaya are two 19th-century merchant streets, a block off Bolshaya Pokrovskaya. Here you'll find houses with original stucco, cozy courtyards with cafes, and small hotels rebuilt from old merchant estates. A stay in a historic Nizhny Novgorod building turns out to be a more interesting alternative to a standard chain hotel — and it doesn't take a much bigger budget either.
From here it's a seven-minute walk to Bolshaya Pokrovskaya and a quarter of an hour to the Kremlin. Mornings at a hotel like this start with a walk through the old town.
If you've come for quiet by the river, it's worth heading outside the city and coming back to the center for day trips. Bor itself is linked to the city by a cable car: in just 12 minutes you cross 3.6 km over the Volga. The Grebnoy Canal and the Zelyony Gorod cottage settlement already belong to the wider agglomeration, but both are a thirty-minute drive from the Kremlin.

Go for the upper part of the city — the Kremlin area, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, or the Upper Volga Embankment. That way all the main sights are within walking distance, and you won't lose an hour just getting to the embankment for a stroll.
If your budget is tight, look at guesthouses and mini-hotels on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya and the Lower Volga Embankment. You can stay a step from the Kremlin for 1,200–1,700 ₽.
By metro the trip takes about 10–15 minutes: change at Moskovskaya and ride to Gorkovskaya.
By taxi across the Kanavinsky Bridge you'll get there in 15–25 minutes, depending on traffic.
On foot, across the bridge and up the Chkalov Staircase, the walk takes about an hour — that's with stops to take in the views.
It's worth staying in Bor if quiet, riverside walks, and a panorama of the city from the opposite bank matter to you.
The cable car runs every five minutes, and the ride takes 12 minutes. From the upper station to the Kremlin is a 15-minute walk, or one stop on surface transit.
Mind the schedule, though: the cable car doesn't run at night, and the last cabin leaves in the evening.
