In July and August, prices in the Pine Grove climb. That's when it's worth looking at the neighboring villages along the coast. Most travelers fly into Adler and then drive to Pitsunda through the Psou border checkpoint. The distance is about 80 km. In high season, the border crossing can take 2–4 hours — keep that in mind, especially if you're planning to catch an early morning flight on the way back.
The main difference between Pitsunda and Gagra is the cape and the ancient grove. Pitsunda's beach bay is sheltered from the surf, so the sea is calmer here. The grove runs along the shore, filling the air with pine scent and phytoncides.
Gagra, in turn, is larger than Pitsunda, has livelier nightlife, and is more convenient to reach from the airport. But Gagra is noisier, and there's no pine park next to its beach like the one in Pitsunda.
