Smolensk sits on the upper Dnieper and along federal highway M1, halfway between Moscow and Minsk. On Moya Bron you'll find 98 places to stay starting from 1,300 ₽ per night.

Pick a hotel for a cultural weekend, a business trip, or a transit overnight on the road. Compare rooms and guest reviews and book the right option in just a couple of minutes.

Where to stay near Cathedral Hill and the Smolensk Fortress Wall

Smolensk's main tourist district is Leninsky, sprawled along the left bank of the Dnieper. It's home to Cathedral Hill with the Assumption Cathedral, fragments of the late-16th- to early-17th-century fortress wall, Lopatinsky Garden, and the pedestrian Bolshaya Sovetskaya Street. If you're coming "to see the city," it makes sense to stay here: most of the towers and museums will be within walking distance.

Why you're comingWhere to stay in SmolenskStarting price
Cultural weekend: fortress wall and Assumption CathedralLeninsky district, historic centerfrom 3,300 ₽
Transit along M1 to Belarus or KaliningradOut-of-town motels and Krasninskoye Highwayfrom 2,400 ₽
Arriving by Lastochka train from MoscowZadneprovsky, near the railway station squarefrom 1,400 ₽

The closest spot to the Assumption Cathedral is Smolenskotel at 2/1 Lenina Street (from 4,900 ₽). It's a classic Soviet high-rise with a view of the center. The cathedral is a 5-minute walk away.

At 19b Gagarin Avenue you'll find the Grand Hotel Megapolis (from 6,300 ₽) — the only five-star hotel in the city. From here it's just 200 meters to Lopatinsky Garden.

A more intimate, budget-friendly option is Respekt Hotel at 18 Parizhskoy Kommuny Street (from 3,300 ₽). The hotel is 600 meters from Lenin Square.

For more options within walking distance of the fortress wall, see the In the center collection.

Transit along M1: where to spend the night in Smolensk on the way from Moscow to Minsk

Smolensk is a natural stop for anyone driving from Moscow to Belarus, as well as to Kaliningrad and back. The distance to Moscow is about 400 km, to Minsk about 335 km, which makes the city a convenient overnight point. If you'd rather not venture into the historic center with its narrow streets and courtyards, choose a place near the city entrances.

Right on highway 66N-1807, at the southern entrance, sits 3A Smolensk M1 (from 5,484 ₽) — a 3-star roadside hotel with parking for cars and trucks.

At 14A Krasninskoye Highway you'll find West (from 2,400 ₽). This is a budget option for a single night. The city center is 4 kilometers away as the crow flies.

If after the road you'd like a steam bath and a swim, turn onto Roslavlskoye Highway — that's where Spa Hotel Koleso is located. This four-star spa hotel (from 2,600 ₽ per night) offers a format of stay that's rare for the city.

Hotels near the railway station: where to stay in Zadneprovsky district if you arrived by train

The Lastochka from Belorussky Station in Moscow runs to Smolensk in about 4 hours and arrives at Smolensk-Central station in Zadneprovsky district. This is the right bank of the Dnieper. From the station you can walk to the historic center in 20 minutes — you just need to cross the bridge.

If you're planning to spend a couple of days in town or hitting the road again in the morning, it makes sense to stay near the station.

The closest spot to the platform is SMART HOTEL Smolensk. It's located at 1 Privokzalnaya Square. Rooms start at 1,400 ₽. The hotel has minimalist rooms, and you can walk to your train in just 2 minutes.

A 15-minute walk away, at 11 Novo-Leningradskaya Street, is OTO Hotel Smolensk. Rooms start at 1,870 ₽. It's a three-star hotel with breakfast and its own parking.

If price matters more to you than location, take a look at the Cheap collection. There you'll find additional places to stay.

The hotel is great — I’ll come back to you again. A day and a half for a trip to Smolensk is nothing at all… A good hotel! I recently stayed at a hotel in the Moscow region — it’s paradise here, but near Zvenigorod it’s just hell… So, gentlemen, Muscovites, don’t go to the Moscow region for a holiday, go much further — to Smolensk (or Belarus). If there’s a paradise on Earth, it’s not only the Krasnodar Krai, but here too :) Awesome hotel!!! And you can walk to the station — it’s nearby, and that’s great!!! True, I arrived on a Friday, and many museums were closed — bummer — which gives me a reason to come again. And where I’ll come back to — I think everyone has already figured it out)

Frequently Asked Questions

The choice depends on the purpose of your trip. For a cultural weekend, choose Leninsky district — the historic center on the left bank of the Dnieper. The fortress wall, Assumption Cathedral, and Lopatinsky Garden are all nearby.

If you arrived by train, it's more convenient to stay in Zadneprovsky district. It stretches out right next to the station. If you're driving from Moscow to Belarus, take a look at the hotels at the city entrances along the M1 highway and Krasninskoye Highway.

On the Moya Bron website you can find the cheapest rooms — from 1,300 ₽ per night at a 2-star hotel.

Three-star hotels in the city center offer rooms from 3,300 ₽. Four-star options: from 2,600 ₽ for a room at Spa Hotel Koleso and from 3,850 ₽ at other city hotels.

The only five-star hotel is Grand Hotel Megapolis, with rates starting from 6,300 ₽.

The final price depends on the district, season, and set of services — for example, whether breakfast, parking, or spa access is included.

The most convenient places to stay are the hotels at the southern and western entrances to Smolensk: that way you won't have to drive into the narrow streets of the center.

Here are a few options:

  • 3A Smolensk M1 hotel — stands right on highway 66N-1807;
  • West hotel — located on Krasninskoye Highway;
  • Spa Hotel Veranda — about 10 kilometers down Minsk Highway.

All three hotels have parking and let you quickly get back onto the M1 in the morning.

Yes, Smolensk has spa hotels. For a Hero City in central Russia, that's an unusual format.

Consider these options:

  • Spa Hotel Koleso on Roslavlskoye Highway — rates from 2,600 ₽ per night;
  • Spa Hotel Veranda outside Smolensk (on Lesnaya Street) — from 7,672 ₽ per night. The hotel has its own complex of bathhouses and a swimming pool.

Both hotels are rated four stars and are an excellent fit for one or two nights focused on relaxation.
