The high right bank is old Simbirsk: the Lenin Memorial, Venets Boulevard above the Volga, the pedestrian stretch of Goncharova Street and the museum quarter around it. Hotels here sit a block or two from Venets and the memorial, so all the main sights fit into a single walk — the best choice for a first visit, a weekend for two or business meetings in the city. This is also where the city's few higher-category hotels with restaurants and conference halls are concentrated: Ulyanovsk is not a resort, and that level is rare here.

If you'd rather live like a local, the centre has plenty of flats rented by the night — with a kitchen, a washing machine and your own entrance instead of a reception desk. Most addresses cluster around Lenina, Goncharova, Kirova and Karla Marksa streets, within walking distance of Venets and the memorial or a couple of stops by public transport. The format works well for families with children and for anyone staying longer than a night or two: having your own kitchen noticeably cuts the cost of breakfasts and dinners.

The left bank is the industrial half of the city: the aircraft plant, Ulyanovsk-Vostochny airport and the residential district of Novy Gorod. People choose a hotel here not by its stars but by how long it takes to reach the factory gate, because crossing to the right bank over the Imperial or Presidential bridge takes anywhere from half an hour to an hour at rush hour. Before you travel, it's worth checking recent news about restrictions on the Presidential Bridge — the usual fifteen to twenty kilometres can take twice as long. If your destination is the plant or the airport in Zavolzhye, there's no point staying in the historic centre.

In Novy Gorod an apartment isn't a compromise — it's the default format for engineers and specialists who spend weeks at a time in Ulyanovsk. Your own kitchen and the quiet of a residential district work better than a hotel room, and the factory gates are ten to fifteen minutes away. Almost every address sits on Sozidateley, Generala Tyuleneva, Livanova or Stolypina avenues, or on Kievsky Boulevard: shops and transport stops are close by, so a car isn't essential.

Ulyanovsk is not a resort, so budget accommodation is available all year round rather than only in the off-season. The cheapest option is a bed in a hostel, followed by private rooms in small hotels and simple studios in residential blocks on the right bank outside the centre. This segment is chosen by drivers passing through, people on work trips, and anyone stopping for a night or two to see the museums before continuing along the Volga.

Passenger flights are handled by Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, also known as Barataevka, on the south-western edge of the city — ten to twelve kilometres from the historic centre and twenty to thirty minutes by taxi. For an early departure or a late-night arrival it's easier to sleep nearby, in the Yugo-Zapadny district along Kamyshinskaya and Yugo-Zapadnaya streets and Znaniy Boulevard. The choice here is mixed — from ordinary flats by the night to an out-of-town complex with a pool — and city transport runs to the centre.

From mid-April to mid-August the Volga becomes the main reason to come to Ulyanovsk: the weather is mild, the river boats are running, and the water pushes museums out of the day's plans. On the city's edges and beyond it, including the Cherdaklinsky district on the left bank, there are lodges and guest complexes right by the water — with a beach, a banya and fishing. It's a format for those arriving by car and happy not to be tied to the embankment and the centre.
