Choose hotels in central Vladimir near the Golden Gate, for trips to Suzdal and Bogolyubovo, budget stays and apartments with a pool and sauna.
The city itself can realistically be seen in one full day: the Golden Gate, the Dormition and St Demetrius cathedrals, Cathedral Square and the museums of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve will take about six or seven hours. If you plan to get out to Bogolyubovo and Suzdal, allow two or three nights.
Vladimir is usually the better value: the choice of places to stay is far wider here and prices are noticeably lower than in Suzdal. Suzdal is easy to visit as a day trip — the drive takes about forty minutes along the Golden Ring highway.

The fastest way is the Lastochka express from Kursky station — about an hour and forty minutes with no changes. The railway station stands at the foot of Cathedral Hill, fifteen minutes' walk from the Golden Gate, but it's uphill, so with a suitcase it's easier to book a place in the historic center from the start.
The spread is wide: the simplest two-star hotels on the outskirts cost several times less than the four-star hotels on Bolshaya Moskovskaya, with apartments in between. Weekends and the early-May holidays are the most expensive, when the main Golden Ring flow passes through town; on weekdays and in winter prices are noticeably softer.
