Vladimir's historic core is compact: it takes about fifteen minutes to walk from the Golden Gate to the Cathedral of St Demetrius along Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street, and another five to the Dormition Cathedral and the overlook above the Klyazma. The entire sightseeing route fits into a kilometer and a half, so the closer your room is to the blocks between Bolshaya Moskovskaya and Lipki Park, the less you'll need a taxi. This suits anyone coming for a weekend who wants to cover the UNESCO sites on foot and walk down into the center for dinner in the evening.

Many travelers use Vladimir as a base for a two-day loop: Bogolyubovo and the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl in the morning, ten kilometers out, then Suzdal, roughly 36 kilometers away along the Golden Ring highway. If you're driving, the southwestern edge of town near the M-7 exit is the more convenient place to stay — you avoid the city traffic and the hunt for parking in the narrow lanes downtown. Properties here more often have spacious grounds with their own parking and a restaurant, so you can come back from a day on the road straight to dinner.

Vladimir is one of the few Golden Ring towns where you can still find a room with a private bathroom for modest money. The most affordable places cluster on the right bank of the Klyazma, in the Zaklyazmensky district, and in the residential blocks along Lenin Avenue — fifteen to twenty minutes from the Golden Gate by bus or taxi. Simple hotels also sit right by the center, near the Kozlov Rampart and Kremlyovskaya Street, so saving money doesn't have to cost you a long ride.

For families of two to four, an aparthotel or a studio apartment usually works out better in Vladimir: you get a kitchen, a washing machine and a sofa that fits a second child. Most of these are on Stroiteley Avenue and in the newer districts on the west side of town, though some are within walking distance of Cathedral Square. The format pays off especially if you're staying more than two nights and using the city as a base for trips around the region.

A day in Vladimir means a few kilometers on foot across hills: the Kozlov Rampart, Cathedral Hill, the descent to the Klyazma and the climb back up. Hotels with a pool, a sauna and a spa come into their own in the evening, and in winter they become the deciding argument, when a walk in the cold ends earlier than planned. You'll find such places both near the historic center and on the green outskirts above the Klyazma, where the pool comes with private grounds and a spot for the car.
