The Old Town, also known as Linnoitus, is a handful of blocks of cobbled streets — Krepostnaya, Podgornaya, Storozhevoy Bashni, Vodnoy Zastavy and Vyborgskaya. Castle Island is a five- to ten-minute walk away, and along the route you pass the Clock Tower, Old Town Hall Square and Market Square. There are almost no big box-style hotels here — guests stay in small hotels and apartments set inside Swedish burgher houses from the 16th and 17th centuries. It's the best choice if you're in town for a night or two and want to wander the city in the evening rather than commute into it.
If you're traveling with friends or with children, a central apartment almost always beats a standard hotel room: your own kitchen, a washing machine, separate rooms. Such flats are rented out both in the historic houses of Linnoitus and in the newer blocks on the other side of the bay — on Kutuzov Boulevard, Lenin Avenue and Leningradsky Avenue, from where the castle is an easy walk through the Old Town. The main advantage is not having to plan your day around café breakfasts: eat at home and head straight out onto Krepostnaya.
Vyborg is a weekend city, and often a room is needed only to get some sleep between the castle and the Lastochka train home. The cheapest choices are a hostel bunk and modest small hotels: some stand right in the Old Town, others in the residential blocks further east, toward the station and Gagarina Street, a couple of bus stops from the center. The rooms here are simple, but that leaves the budget for St. Olaf's Tower, Mon Repos and lunch with a view of the bay.
The Lastochka train from Finlyandsky Station takes about an hour, so many people arrive with light luggage for a single night — and then it makes sense to sleep five minutes from the platform. The blocks around Zheleznodorozhnaya and Vokzalnaya streets are cheaper than the center, yet the Old Town and the castle are still an easy walk from here. This is also where the most conventional, full-service hotels in town stand — with a restaurant, a sauna and their own parking, which helps if you're driving.
40-letiya VLKSM Embankment stretches along the harbor opposite Castle Island: the windows look out on the water, St. Olaf's Tower and the castle lit up in the evening. In summer, boats set off from here and bay cruises run, and the walk along the water is the prettiest in the city. This same shore holds Vyborg's few genuinely full-service hotels — with a restaurant, sauna and spa, if what you want is service rather than just the keys to a flat.
Tverdysh begins right across the bridge from the castle, and the city ends quickly there: beyond are pines, granite cliffs and the coves of the Mon Repos park museum. It's worth staying here if Mon Repos is the main point of the trip and you plan to go in more than once or run there in the mornings. The castle is about half an hour away on foot or a few minutes by taxi, and instead of tourist lanes you get water, jetties and quiet.
North and west of the center, along the Saimaa Canal and the shores of the Gulf of Finland, the forested side of Vyborg begins, with coves, piers and banyas. It's worth coming here for a long weekend and with a group: you won't hear other tourists at all and the evening can go on around the grill, though it will be awkward without a car — the castle is several kilometers away. This option fits well into a route with trips out to the Vuoksa and the waterfalls, if Vyborg isn't the only stop on your journey.
Choose the Old Town — Krepostnaya, Podgornaya, Storozhevoy Bashni, Vodnoy Zastavy and Vyborgskaya streets. Castle Island is five to ten minutes from any of them, and on the way you'll pass the Clock Tower, Old Town Hall Square and Market Square. Walking from the district near the station is realistic too, it simply takes noticeably longer.

Yes, if Mon Repos is the main point of the trip and you plan to visit the park several times or run there in the mornings. It is about half an hour on foot from the center, so on a short one-night trip it's more convenient to stay closer to the castle. Tverdysh is quieter and greener, but it has fewer cafés and shops than the Old Town.
The most comfortable stretch runs from late June to mid-August: it's warm, boats run on the bay and the castle hosts knights' festivals. The second peak is the New Year holidays, with the Christmas market and tournaments in the fortress. From late November to mid-March the city is frosty and snowy, but there are fewer people and rooms are more affordable.
In two days you can cover the castle with St. Olaf's Tower, the Old Town with Market Square and the Old Town Hall, the Mon Repos park museum on Tverdysh and the Alvar Aalto Library. If time is left, walk out to the Anna Fortifications. With a car it's easy to add the waterfalls at Roshchino or the banks of the Vuoksa.
