The Old Town and the Castle in a Single Walking Day

The walk from the station to Krepostnoy Bridge takes just 15 minutes. Along the way you’ll pass the city’s landmarks: the Covered Market (1906), the Round Tower (1547) on Market Square, which today houses a restaurant, and the Clock Tower — all that remains of the 15th-century cathedral.

Krepostnaya Street is the heart of old Vyborg. Tucked away among the narrow lanes and rocky outcrops stands the House of the Merchant Guild of the Holy Spirit (14th century), one of the oldest residential buildings in Russia. Be sure to drop into the local cafés for Swedish cinnamon buns.

Cross the bridge and you’ll come to Vyborg Castle. Admission to the grounds is free, while tickets to the museum and St. Olaf’s Tower are sold separately. Climbing the spiral staircase to a height of 48 metres takes some effort, but the panorama of the Gulf of Finland and the tiled rooftops is worth every step.

When to Go: Three August Weekends and the Quiet Gold of September

Summer

Summer here is short and mild: daytime temperatures hover around +20 °C, dropping to +14 °C at night. It’s too cool for swimming, but the weather is perfect for long walks.

August packs a full schedule:

• 4–9 August: the Window to Europe film festival at the Vyborg Palace.
• 14–16 August: Medieval Days at the castle. On the programme: knights’ tournaments, a craft fair, and historical re-enactments.
• 22 August: City Day. Expect the Pirate Harbor SUP festival and a celebratory concert.

Tip: book your accommodation for these dates a month in advance.

September

Temperatures stay around +16 °C. The days are still long, but the noisy crowds of tourists have already gone — the best time for a walk in Mon Repos Park.

Winter

Temperatures hold at around −5 °C (down to −9 °C at the peak of the frosts). The Old Town under snow, lit by street lanterns, takes on a Scandinavian intimacy. People come for cosy museums, hot glögg, and atmospheric cafés along Krepostnaya Street.
