Novosibirsk

Novosibirsk is the capital of Siberia and Russia's third-largest city. Scale meets nature here: the Opera House with the country's largest dome sits alongside Akademgorodok, tucked away in a pine forest. The major Trans-Siberian Railway runs through the city, and arched bridges span the Ob. In summer, beaches open on the Ob Sea at a comfortable +23 °C, while in winter Novosibirsk turns into a stage for snow sculpture festivals, when a brisk −14 °C nips the air.

Krasny Prospekt and Mikhailovskaya Embankment: the City’s Main Axis

Your first taste of the city begins on Krasny Prospekt — a seven-kilometre thoroughfare that starts at the Ob embankment and cuts through Novosibirsk from south to north, passing Lenin Square. This is where the city’s main architectural and cultural life is concentrated.

The centrepiece of the route is the Opera and Ballet Theatre, which opened on 12 May 1945. Its dome, 60 metres in diameter, is held up without internal supports and remains the largest in the country.

Nearby you’ll also find:

  • The Hundred-Apartment Building, which won the Grand Prix at the 1937 Paris Exhibition.
  • Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in the Neo-Byzantine style.
  • The Regional Museum on Lenin Square.

From the Opera House, the avenue slopes gently down to Mikhailovskaya Embankment. This two-kilometre promenade offers panoramic views of the Metro Bridge — the world’s longest covered metro bridge (2,145 metres). In summer fairs and cycle paths operate here, while in winter an ice rink is set up and festive lighting switches on.

Beyond the Centre

Just half an hour’s drive south lies the famous Akademgorodok, founded in 1957. It’s a scientific hub home to institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk State University, and the House of Scientists. Be sure to seek out an unusual monument here — the laboratory mouse “knitting” a strand of DNA.

And if you fancy heading to the water, catch a suburban train from Novosibirsk-Glavny station. Forty minutes later you’ll arrive at the “Obskoye More” platform, where the beaches of the Novosibirsk Reservoir begin.

When to Go: Siberian Seasons and the Cultural Calendar

The best time to visit is May: the average temperature hovers around +13 °C (rising to +18 °C during the day). Tourist numbers are low, and hotel prices are gentler than in the peak summer season.

From June through August the average temperature is +18…+20 °C, and July daytime highs often reach +25 °C — the season for embankment walks, visits to Akademgorodok, and trips to the Ob Sea.

From mid-March to early April, the Vadim Repin Trans-Siberian Art Festival takes place at the Philharmonic and the Kats State Concert Hall — the city’s headline classical music event.

In winter the average temperature settles at −15 °C (around −17 °C in January), and January nights can drop to −22 °C. This is the time for skating rinks, cross-country ski trails in Zaeltsovsky Park, and the snow sculpture festival held in the first ten days of January at Arena Park.

Where to Stay

The city has over 400 hotels, with prices starting from 3,800 ₽ per night. For example, Marins Novosibirsk has a rating of 9.1: five thousand guests have reviewed it. Another option is the central Grand Autograph Hotel Novosibirsk at 31 Ordzhonikidze Street. The hotel is one block from Krasny Prospekt and the Opera House.

Frequently asked questions about Novosibirsk

If your train leaves from Novosibirsk-Glavny, book a hotel on Shamshurin, Zheleznodorozhnaya or Pisarev Street. You can walk from there to the platforms in 5–10 minutes.

If you're flying out of Tolmachevo, the Left Bank or Akademgorodok is more convenient. You'll bypass the main traffic on the way to the airport and shave 20–30 minutes off the trip compared with leaving from the center.

By car, the trip runs 25–30 minutes outside rush hour, and up to an hour in traffic.

Marshrutka minibuses go from Lavrentyev Avenue to Kalinin Square and Marx Square. The ride takes 40–50 minutes.

If you need to be at the Technopark for a conference in the morning and at dinner downtown in the evening, budget an hour each way.

The local climate is sharply continental. In winter the average temperature is −12 °C, occasionally dropping to −29 °C. Summer daytime air warms to +23 to +27 °C.

The best time to come to Novosibirsk is from June through August — the most comfortable season for walks along Krasny Prospekt and trips to the Berd Cliffs and the Ob Sea.

The season barely affects hotel prices, though. Demand is driven by conferences and forums, not the weather.

If you want comfort for 1–2 days with a reception desk, breakfast and a spa included, go with a classic hotel.

An aparthotel is the better choice for a week-long stay, business trips, family travel, or if you prefer to cook for yourself. Aparthotels usually give you more space and a better price for a comparable location.

Downtown is dominated by 3–4-star aparthotels. Akademgorodok also has aparthotel options, located near the university.
