Samara
People come to Samara for the Volga. Here you'll find the longest landscaped embankment on the river — more than five kilometers of walks along the water. Step away from the bank and you're among wooden and stone Art Nouveau mansions. On the horizon, beyond the water, the Zhiguli Mountains stand frozen. Even if the weather turns capricious, you won't be bored: the "gingerbread" drama theater, the space museum, and Stalin's Bunker will keep you busy all weekend.
From the Ladya to the Leningradsky Descent: the main route
The heart of leisure in Samara is the embankment. It stretches across four sections: from the river station to the Oktyabrsky Descent. This is an ideal place for walks — there are bike paths, sandy beaches, summer cafes, and landmarks, from the famous “Ladya” stele (1986) to the monument to Comrade Sukhov. A walk from Revolution Square to the Ladya takes just 15 minutes.
Running parallel to the embankment is the pedestrian Leningradskaya Street — the local “Arbat”, where street musicians are always playing. At the end of Kuybysheva Street, on Chapaev Square, stands the academic drama theater. The 1888 building with its patterned facade is what locals call the “gingerbread house”.
In this same block, two remarkable buildings deserve attention: the Kurlina House (1903) — a vivid example of Samara Art Nouveau — and the mysterious Golovkin Dacha with its famous elephant sculptures.
If you’re interested in the history of cosmonautics, be sure to visit the “Samara Kosmicheskaya” museum. The building itself stands at 21 Lenin Avenue, by the Rossiyskaya metro station. At the entrance you’ll be met by a real 68-meter Soyuz launch vehicle. Samara (formerly Kuybyshev) was producing such rockets back in the Soviet years.
On the third day we recommend heading out of town — to the Samarskaya Luka peninsula. Cross the Volga to climb Mount Strelnaya, walk the eco-trails with panoramic views of the river bend, and visit the village of Shiryaevo. It was here that Ilya Repin once worked on his legendary “Barge Haulers on the Volga”.
Seasons, getting there, and where to stay
Seasons
Peak season runs from June through August. During the day, temperatures hover around +28 °C. This is when the steamers to Shiryaevo run and the city beach is open.
In September and October the temperature is +20 to +10 °C. This is the best time to visit Samarskaya Luka, before the rains set in.
In winter the average temperature drops to −7 °C, and at night to −16 °C. Even so, the museums and Stalin’s Bunker are always open, and in February the Winter Grushinsky Festival takes place.
How to get there
From Moscow, the most convenient option is the overnight train. You’ll arrive at the station with a 101-meter spire — the tallest railway station building in Europe. If you fly, an aeroexpress and bus No. 78 run from Kurumoch Airport (35 km from the city) to the center (the fare is about 32 ₽).
Transport and lodging
Keep in mind that the Samara metro is quite short and barely reaches the historic center. As for lodging, there are more than 242 hotels in the city. On Moya Bron you can find a place to match any request: from the atmospheric boutique hotel Countries at 4,720 ₽ to the luxurious Lotte Hotel Samara with a view of the Volga at 22,000 ₽.

Frequently asked questions about Samara
The choice depends on the purpose of your trip. For walks through the old town, pick the Samarsky district — the blocks between Kuybysheva, Stepana Razina and the embankment. If you're on a business trip, it's more convenient to stay in the Leninsky district, on Novo-Sadovaya: business centers and Alabinskaya metro station are close by. If you're planning a trip to the mountains or Samarskaya Luka, look at the Krasnoglinsky district. It borders the Zhiguli Mountains.
Aviaotel operates right inside the terminal: rates start at 6,400 ₽ per night and the check-in desks are just a few steps away. It's the most reliable option for early-morning departures: you don't need to factor in traffic on the Moskovskoye Highway or travel time from the city. If your flight isn't too early and you want to stay in Kurumoch village, there are hotels there too — for example, Russkaya Okhota.
Samara has two five-star hotels: Lotte Hotel Samara on Samarskaya Street and 7 Avenue Hotel and Spa on Novo-Sadovaya. Lotte Hotel is a premium international property, with rates starting at 34,000 ₽. 7 Avenue is a spa hotel with a pool and banya. Rates start from 12,000 ₽. These hotels suit different purposes: the first for those who value top-tier service, the second for those who want to unwind and relax after work.
Yes, such options exist. Next to the railway station is SMART HOTEL Samara. Rates start at 2,220 ₽. In the Kirovsky district you can stay at the Chetyre Sezona hotel. Rates start from 2,500 ₽. At the 19th–23rd kilometer of the Moskovskoye Highway there are options from 800 ₽. But keep the distance from the center in mind: if you stay on the Moskovskoye Highway, you'll need a car or taxi to get around downtown.
The Krasnoglinsky district is worth choosing not only in winter but in summer too. The Krasnaya Glinka and Upravlenchesky neighborhoods work well for summer activities. From here it's easy to set off for hikes through Samarskaya Luka, walks in the Zhiguli Mountains and visits to the beaches on the left bank of the Volga. The distance to the city center is 25–30 kilometers. Clean air and a pine forest make this district a good choice for a family stay or a trip with a dog.
