Svetlogorsk
Svetlogorsk is a small Baltic resort town 50 km from Kaliningrad. It grew up on the foundations of the German town of Rauschen. Its uniqueness lies in its setting: the town "hovers" on a 40-meter cliff with a view over the Baltic. The atmosphere of the early 20th century is still preserved here — vintage villas, winding lanes, and the famous water tower. A cable car and a wave-shaped promenade with the largest sundial in Europe lead down to the sea. Travelers come here for the intimate seaside pace and the Prussian architecture.
A Top-Down Stroll: from the Rauschen Tower to the “Nymph” on the Promenade
The resort lives off the contrast between its two levels.
The upper town is a realm of pre-revolutionary villas. Take a walk through the “music quarter” (Verdi and Chaykovskogo Streets) or stop by Oktyabrskaya Street to admire the details of the historic buildings.
- The 1907 Kirche (now the Church of St. Seraphim of Sarov) — a fine example of neo-Gothic architecture.
- The water tower designed by architect Otto Walter Kuckuck (1908) — the 25-meter symbol of the town, whose silhouette has become Svetlogorsk’s calling card.
The lower level greets visitors with a renovated wooden promenade that curves along the shore like a sea wave. Here you can buy amber jewelry and see the famous “Nymph” — a bronze sculpture by Hermann Brachert tucked into a mosaic shell.
The upper and lower parts of the town are linked by a cable car. It’s less a means of transport than an attraction in itself: just a couple of minutes and you descend from the cliff straight to the beach, skipping the long staircases and switchbacks.
If you want to spend the day at a slower pace, head to Tikhoe Lake. It sits within a mixed coniferous-deciduous forest park in the center of town. And if you still have energy, make it to the neighboring village of Otradnoye — the house-museum of sculptor Hermann Brachert is there.

The beach season here is short: the sea only warms up by the end of July. At the height of summer, air temperature is comfortable — around +19…+20 °C. September is the perfect time for those seeking quiet: the promenade empties, and the air cools to +14…+15 °C.
Year-round leisure
Svetlogorsk has held federal-resort status since 1999. Its sanatoriums (“Yantarny Bereg”, “Volna”, “Otradnoye”) welcome guests all year round. Life doesn’t pause in winter: travelers come here for wellness treatments and large-scale concerts at Yantar-Hall.
Getting there
First you fly into Khrabrovo Airport (Kaliningrad), then travel on to Svetlogorsk-2 station:
- By the Lastochka express train: departure from the Southern Railway Station, journey time roughly 45–55 minutes.
- By bus No. 118: the trip can take more than an hour when there’s traffic.
The town is spread along a high shore, so from the station down to the promenade you’ll need to walk or take the cable car.

If you are arriving by train and want restaurants, the organ hall and the old architecture within reach, choose the upper town, but closer to one of the descents. If reaching the water without stairs is what counts, look for a place on the seafront itself or in the first row of buildings; there are few of those, and they get booked first.

Out of season people come for balneotherapy and spa treatments, walks along the promenade and trips to Kaliningrad, Zelenogradsk and Yantarny, so there is effectively no low season here.
