Tyumen

Tyumen is a city of contrasts. Start the day with a walk along Russia's only four-level embankment, with its 24-metre height difference and striking views. Then cross to the right bank of the Tura via the Lovers' Bridge to experience the atmosphere of the old merchant quarter. When darkness falls, treat yourself to a "thermal evening." Just imagine: it is −14 °C outside, while you relax in a hot open-air pool. Tyumen's hot springs are open all year round.

Walking Along the Tura Embankment and Tsvetnoy Boulevard

The city’s historic centre is fairly compact: it takes twenty minutes to walk from Lenin Square to the river. The Tura Embankment stretches for four kilometres along the water and has four levels. The upper level is a boulevard with monuments, below it are walking terraces, and the promenade runs right beside the water. The 247.6-metre cable-stayed Lovers’ Bridge leads from the embankment to the Zarechny neighbourhood, which offers panoramic views of the city.

The second route is Tsvetnoy Boulevard. Its highlights include five squares — Arts, Fountain, Lovers’, Circus and Sports squares — the city’s largest fountain, “The Seasons,” as well as a circus and amusement rides. The boulevard comes alive in the evenings, drawing crowds in December and July alike. Along the way, stop at the Znamensky Cathedral, built in the Siberian Baroque style, and the Siberian Cats Square. The square has 12 cast-iron figures covered in gold paint. The statues commemorate the approximately five thousand Siberian cats sent to besieged Leningrad in 1944 to control the rat population.

Verkhny Bor, Martsial and Avan Thermal Springs

Devote the second part of your trip to the thermal springs. Here are the three main locations:

  • Verkhny Bor (15 km from the centre): a place to relax in a pine forest. It has three outdoor pools filled with +39…+40 °C water drawn from a 1.2 km-deep well.
  • Martsial (formerly “LetoLeto”): located within the city limits. A convenient option if you do not have a car.
  • Avan (27 km from Tyumen, Kamenka village): also accessible by city bus.

What you need to know before visiting:

  • Opening hours: “Martsial” is open until 21:30, “Verkhny Bor” until 23:00, and “Avan” until 01:00.
  • Important details: “Martsial” and “Verkhny Bor” are open daily. Thursday is a maintenance day at “Avan” (the thermal area opens only at 18:00).

Frequently asked questions about Tyumen

The most convenient option is to stay right by the pools themselves — on the Salairsky Highway near Verkhniy Bor, or on the Velizhansky. Then you can walk to the water instead of depending on taxis and late-night transfers. If you want to combine the city with the springs, choose the center: the drive to Verkhniy Bor takes about half an hour.

Yes, the thermal complexes around the city are open year-round. In hard frost the experience looks even more striking than in summer: the water holds at +38…+45 °C, steam rises off the pool and snow lies along the edge. The season never closes — on the contrary, winter is exactly when demand for accommodation outside the city runs highest.

The range is wide: the most affordable segment is hotels and apartments in the residential districts, the middle is three- and four-star hotels in the center, and the most expensive is country cottages and wellness complexes by the springs. The price depends on the district, the amenities and the season, and out of town a winter weekend is usually dearer than a summer weekday.

For short business trips people usually take the upper-tier hotels in the quarter between Respubliki, Lenina and Ordzhonikidze streets — regional agencies, office buildings and restaurants are all close by. If the assignment runs to a month, a local chain hotel in a residential district or an aparthotel with a kitchen makes more sense.

Pick a place by the railway station, on the streets around it — that makes it easier to catch a train to the Khanty-Mansi or Yamalo-Nenets districts without crossing the whole city in the morning. If you are flying out of Roshchino on an early departure, it is worth staying closer to the airport. Anyone driving toward Kurgan will find it more convenient to stop right on the highway.
