Hotels in Arkhyz

All of Arkhyz's resort infrastructure sits along Gornaya Street in Romantik: the gondola base station, rental shops, cafes — everything within a few minutes' walk of the hotels. In winter this is the most convenient choice, since you can carry your boots in hand instead of spending the morning getting to the slope. It is also the priciest place to stay on the resort, especially over the New Year holidays. Best for skiers and snowboarders who come to ride rather than to tour the area.

The village of Arkhyz lies 8–10 km below Romantik in the Bolshoy Zelenchuk valley, and it goes about its life as an ordinary Caucasus settlement: shops, bakeries and dozens of guesthouses along Bankovskaya, Khubieva, Kurdzhieva and Alieva streets. Rooms here cost noticeably less than at the resort, and the gondola base station is about fifteen minutes away by car. A good fit if you are watching your budget, travelling with a car, or coming in summer when the lifts are closed.

If you are coming to ski but would rather not pay for a room right by the gondola, look for a hotel in the village that runs its own shuttle: a driver takes you to the base station in the morning and picks you up in the evening. In winter a scheduled shuttle bus also runs between Romantik and the village, so a car is not essential. While you are at it, check whether there is a ski storage room and somewhere to dry your boots — hauling gear up a narrow staircase to your room is nobody's idea of fun.

The meadows at the entrance to the Sofia Gorge sit 7–8 km from Romantik, and this is where the trails to the Sofia and Dukka lakes and to the Kazachy and Baritovy waterfalls begin. There is no busy resort life here — only mountains, the river and a handful of complexes among the trees — so people come for the quiet and the hiking. Plan for summer and trekking rather than skiing, and ideally bring your own car, as part of the road is unpaved.

After a day on the slopes or a long hike, a banya and a pool are less a luxury than a way of making it to the next morning in one piece. Before booking, find out what exactly the word "spa" covers: in some places it is a full complex with a pool and a steam room, in others a sauna by appointment or a relaxation corner next to the gym. You will find such hotels both on Gornaya Street in Romantik and down in the village, so you can choose by location as well.

With children in Arkhyz, what matters most is a short hop to the lift or to the shop: with a stroller and a sledge in tow, every extra kilometre turns into a sport of its own. In winter, look at resorts in Romantik with a kids' club and an activity programme; in summer, at roomy houses in the village that make it easy to head out into the valley on foot. The walks along the Bolshoy Zelenchuk are easy going, and you do not need an hour in the car to reach them.

The 10th-century Christian churches at Nizhny Arkhyz and the Academy of Sciences astrophysical observatory stand not in the resort village but further down the valley along the A-156 highway, about an hour's drive from the village. If sightseeing matters more to you than the slopes, it makes sense to stay right on that road or in the neighbouring villages: the landmarks are closer, it is quieter, and the Bolshoy Zelenchuk rushes past below your windows. Bear in mind the trade-off — the gondola is a longer drive away, and without a car it will be awkward.
