Arkhyz
Arkhyz is a place that changes with the seasons. From December through April, the resort turns into a skier's paradise: 27 kilometres of pistes and 9 ropeways are at your service. In summer, once the snow melts, hiking trails open to the Sofia Waterfalls and the Dukka Lakes. The village itself is small — only 849 people live here — but its infrastructure is developing fast: the modern resort villages of Romantik and Lunnaya Polyana have grown up nearby. And for history lovers, the lower part of the valley preserves the 10th-century Alan Settlement and the rock-carved Face of Christ.
Where to ski: Romantik and Lunnaya Polyana
The main skiing hub is Romantik. It sits 10 km above the village, in the valley of the Arkhyz River. Here you will find hotels with ski-in / ski-out access to the slopes, a service centre with equipment rental, an instructor school, as well as the Ayran Baran and Tramplin-1650 restaurants.
In the same valley, 1.7 km above Romantik, is the Lunnaya Polyana zone. Its infrastructure is more modern and there are fewer people, and it also has a children’s ski park.
Weather and season
The 2026–2027 season starts on 6 December. Daytime winter temperatures in the village stay below zero (around 0 to −3 °C in December, about −5 to −7 °C in January, and up to −3 °C in February), dropping to −7 °C at night. It is always colder on the slopes: temperatures stay firmly below zero there and the snow is deep. Fans of active leisure can also enjoy evening skiing.

Arkhyz has a total of 115 hotels: accommodation prices range from 1,400 ₽ for a guesthouse room to 32,000 ₽ for a premium suite.

Summer in Arkhyz: from the Sofia Waterfalls to the Alan temples
From June to September the valley becomes a trekking base. From the Taulu meadow you can reach the Sofia Waterfalls in 1.5–2 hours. This is a cascade of glacial streams at the foot of Mount Sofia (3,637 m), where the highest arm reaches around 90 m.
For a more demanding route, head to the three Sofia Lakes, set at an elevation of 2,800 m. And if you want to avoid the crowds, choose trails to the Dukka Lakes or to Semitsvetnoye Lake.
Tip: the best time to visit the waterfalls is July and August. During these months the glacier is actively melting, and the streams are at their fullest. Air temperatures are comfortable: about +23 to +24 °C by day and +9 to +11 °C at night.
25 km down the valley lies the Nizhne-Arkhyz Settlement. Three 10th-century Zelenchuk churches survive here — some of the oldest Christian buildings on the territory of Russia. And nearby, on a cliff, you can see the Face of Christ.
Close by is the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences with its six-metre BTA telescope — the largest optical telescope in the country. You can see all these sights in a single day, ideally with a guide. That way you will neatly round off the cultural programme.

The 2026–2027 ski season officially starts on 6 December 2026. The season usually closes in late March or early April. By that time snow has already melted at elevations below 2,000 metres, but the slopes higher up are still suitable for skiing.
The nearest airport (MRV) is 210–220 kilometres from Arkhyz. The drive takes about four hours — the route runs along a mountain switchback. You have several travel options: you can book a private transfer, take a minibus via Cherkessk, or catch the scheduled bus — in that case the journey will take about 5.5 hours.
If you plan to ski hard and want to take advantage of ski‑in/ski‑out, choose Romantik or Lunnaya Polyana. If saving money and being closer to the start of the hiking trails matters more, stay in Old Arkhyz. It sits not far from the Taulu meadow. On top of that, you will find family-run cafés serving khychiny and ayran here.
Start the day with a hike to the Sofia Waterfalls. They lie about 10–11 kilometres from the Taulu meadow (one way). After lunch, head to the Nizhne‑Arkhyz Settlement and see the Face of Christ. All these sights are located 25 kilometres down the valley.
In a single day you can fit in a trip:
- to Mount Pastukhova — the BTA observatory is located there. The distance is about 40 kilometres;
- to the neighbouring valleys: Dombay (155 kilometres) or Teberda (134 kilometres).
