The city's most affordable segment is three-star hotels, small hotels and guest houses; there are literally a couple of two-star places in Derbent, and they win nothing on price. This kind of stay helps when you've come for a couple of nights for the fortress and the Magals and don't want to pay extra for service. It's also a sensible alternative to day trips from Makhachkala — that's more than a hundred kilometres each way.
