If the Naryn-Kala citadel, the Juma Mosque and walks through the Magals are the main draw, choose the old town and the centre: everything is within walking distance. If you want to combine history with swimming, look at the northern approach along Khandadash Tagiev Street — the fortress and the city beach are about the same distance from there. If the sea and quiet come first, settle in the Kosa district to the north or in the villages of Khazar and Avadan south of the city.

The nearest airport is Uytash in Makhachkala, about a hundred kilometres away on the R-217 highway. There is also the "Derbent" railway station on the Moscow — Makhachkala line, which is convenient for anyone coming from the southern regions or from Makhachkala itself.
