Where to stay in Makhachkala: the center near the Juma Mosque, Petra I Avenue, or Karaman
The city stretches along the Caspian shore for several dozen kilometers. So when choosing a place to stay, the main question for a traveler is not so much the hotel's star rating as the location. It determines how far you'll have to walk to the Juma Mosque, how quickly you can reach the embankment, and whether you should keep a car handy for trips out of town.
In the center — near the Juma Mosque and Rasul Gamzatov Avenue
This is the old core of the city: Rasul Gamzatov Avenue, Buinakskogo Street, Imam Shamil Street, the central markets, and the bakeries with hot chudu. From here you can walk to the Central Juma Mosque and Rodopski Boulevard. Nearby are cafés serving khinkal and kurze, and in the evening it's pleasant to stroll across the square.
- Kaspiy — a 2-star hotel on Buinakskogo Street, from 2 500 ₽ per night.
- Tarkho — a three-star hotel about a kilometer from the center, from 3 300 ₽.
On Petra I Avenue and near Ak-Gol Lake
This district sits in the southeastern part of the city, closest to the Caspian. One of the main thoroughfares runs through it, Ak-Gol Park with its namesake lake spreads out here, and there's a short way down to the embankment. Unlike the noisy center, the atmosphere is calmer. The area is better suited for walks by the water, especially in the evening, when cafés with terraces open along the lake.
- Ak-Gol — a 2-star hotel right on Petra I Avenue, from 2 500 ₽.
- Al Firay — a 5-star hotel by Ak-Gol Park, from 3 490 ₽. It's one of the two five-star hotels in the city — and its price competes with three-star options.
Karaman and the northern exit toward the Sulak Canyon
The new neighborhoods of Karaman-5 and Karaman-7 sit on the federal highway heading toward the Sulak Canyon and the Sarykum Dune. They suit travelers with a car who plan trips north of the city. Stay here and you save half an hour on the drive to the canyon and the dune, and you won't have to push back through downtown traffic every evening.
- Antey — a 5-star hotel in Karaman-7, from 5 500 ₽. It's the only five-star hotel on the northern outskirts.
- Guest House No. 1 — in the same neighborhood, from 4 400 ₽. A solid option for a family or a small group.
| District | What it's good for | Who it suits | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Center and Rasul Gamzatov Avenue | Walking distance to the Juma Mosque, the markets, and cafés with Dagestani cuisine | Travelers who want the city pulse and a stroll through the center | from 2 500 ₽ |
| Petra I Avenue and Ak-Gol Park | Quieter, next to the lake with access to the Caspian embankment | Travelers who want to combine city life with walks by the water | from 2 400 ₽ |
| Karaman and the northern exit | Shorter drive to the Sulak Canyon and the Sarykum Dune | Travelers with a car planning day trips | from 4 000 ₽ |
| Coast outside the city | Sea, pool, or nature without urban bustle | Travelers who come to relax, not to walk the capital | from 4 000 ₽ |
Where to base yourself for the Sulak Canyon and the Sarykum Dune
From central Makhachkala it's about 80 km north along the highway to the Sulak Canyon, and about 30 km to the Sarykum Dune. If you're planning two trips over two days, it makes sense to settle closer to the city exit or right next to one of the natural landmarks. That way you save time in the morning — every kilometer covered in advance counts.
- Sarykum by Cronwell Hotel&SPA — in the village of Tyube, right by the dune, 4 stars, from 7 300 ₽. The hotel has a spa setup and, more importantly, a short route to the dune itself. It's easy to climb at sunrise before the heat sets in.
The Caspian coast: Manaskent, Kaspiysk, and the northern shore
Makhachkala is a noisy, busy city, but most hotels sit far from the beach. If you want to unwind by the water, with a pool or spa treatments, it's better to head to the coast — to separate villages and resort complexes. For the full list, see the collection By the Sea.
- Victoria Resort&SPA — stands in Manaskent, south of the city, right by the Caspian Sea. From 14 375 ₽ per night. The resort complex has a pool and a spa zone.
- Calipso Palace — on the northern shore, about 28 km from the city center. From 12 325 ₽ per night.

Frequently Asked Questions
The best bet is the northern neighborhoods — Karaman-5 and Karaman-7 — as well as the village of Tyube, which sits right by the dune. From the center to the Sulak Canyon is about 80 km. Every 10 km you cover before leaving the city noticeably shortens the morning drive.
The Sarykum by Cronwell hotel is right at the dune. It works both for a single overnight stop and as a full base. From here it's easy to walk to the foot of the dune.
Makhachkala has 154 hotels. Prices start at 2 000 ₽ per night for 2-star options — for example, the Krepost hotel on Prosveshcheniya Street.
For a 3-star hotel, expect to pay from 3 200 ₽ per night, and from 4 000 ₽ for a four-star.
The five-star Al Firay near Ak-Gol offers rooms from 3 490 ₽. That's a fairly low price for a hotel of this class. As a result, guests have an easier time deciding between a three-star and a five-star option.
Within the city limits there aren't many hotels with a beach within walking distance. The Kaspiy hotel is not far from the city beach, but that beach is more for strolling than for swimming.
If you want to relax by the water, with a pool and spa services, look at the resort hotels outside the city:
- Victoria Resort&SPA in Manaskent;
- Calipso Palace on the northern shore;
- hotels in Kaspiysk and the village of Tyube.
For families and groups traveling by car, it's often more convenient to stay on the northern outskirts. Consider these options:
- Guest House No. 1 and the five-star Antey in Karaman-7;
- hotels along the Federal Highway;
- the Sarykum by Cronwell hotel by the dune.
In these spots it's easier to find parking and get back on the road, and the main natural landmarks are significantly closer than from the city center.
