Hotels in Minsk

If you're coming to Minsk for the first time, stay in the Upper Town: from here it's a walk to Freedom Square, the town hall and the Trinity Suburb on the bank of the Svisloch, and about ten minutes across the bridge to the Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre. Restaurants and bars are concentrated all around, so you won't have to go anywhere in the evening. The area suits tourists and couples who are here for a couple of nights and want to step out of the hotel straight into the historic center.

Pobediteley Avenue runs northwest from the center, lined with the Palace of Sports, Victory Park, large shopping malls and Minsk-Arena at the far end. Choose this area if you've come for a match or a concert, or if you like starting the morning with a run — a kilometer-long riverside promenade with a bike path stretches along the Svisloch here. The closer you get to the Arena, the farther you are from the old town, but the metro is close and the green blocks are spacious.

Minsk-Passazhirsky station stands practically in the center — across the road are Independence Square, the Red Church and the start of Independence Avenue with the GUM department store. This is the most convenient option if you arrive by train or bus from Moscow, Saint Petersburg or Smolensk and don't want to spend time hauling a suitcase across town. It also works well for a business trip: the metro, conference halls and business districts are close by, and most museums are within walking distance.

For two or three nights a hotel with breakfast and a front desk is the better deal, but for a week — or a trip with children — an apartment with a kitchen makes more sense, since you won't have to hunt for a cafe every evening. Minsk has plenty of such places both in the center and along Pobediteley Avenue, and some of them are aparthotels, where the kitchen comes with hotel service and housekeeping. It's also a good format if you're using the city as a base for trips out to Nesvizh, Mir or Logoysk.

Rooms in Grushevka, Vesnyanka, Kamennaya Gorka or Uruchye cost noticeably less than in the center, and the metro gets you to the old town in twenty to thirty minutes. The trade-off is worth it on a longer trip, or if you've come with family or by car — parking is easier in the courtyards of the residential districts and the evenings are quieter. For a short weekend, count time as well as money: the round trip will eat up a noticeable part of your walking day.

Minsk winters are mild but dark and damp, so a pool and sauna at the hotel are worth more here than they seem when you're booking in summer. Such complexes are concentrated along Pobediteley Avenue and by the Svisloch, which means the center is still close to the river and the sports cluster. The format works both for an off-season trip with children and for a business trip where the evening is easier to spend at the hotel than out in the city.
