For a first visit — the Upper Town and the Trinity Suburb: the whole historic center is walkable from there. If you're coming for a concert or a match, take Pobediteley Avenue, and for a business trip or an arrival by train the blocks around the railway station and Independence Square are more convenient. To save money, look at the residential districts — Grushevka, Vesnyanka, Kamennaya Gorka.

The city covers every segment: from hostels and simple two- and three-star hotels in the residential districts to international five-star brands in the center. The gap between the center and the outskirts is noticeable, but taxis and time on the metro eat into part of it. Rooms are priciest in the high season from May to October and over the New Year holidays, and cheapest in November and March.

The main currency for payments is the Belarusian ruble. Mir cards are accepted by many hotels and some ATMs, but not all of them, so it's better to keep a reserve of cash in BYN or US dollars. Exchange offices can be found at banks, at Minsk-2 airport and in the large shopping malls.

The most comfortable weather runs from May to October: warm, dry and ideal for walks through the parks and along the Svisloch. Winter is usually mild with little snow, and before New Year a Christmas market opens on October Square. November and March are the quietest months: few tourists and the lowest accommodation prices.

For two or three nights in the center a hotel is more convenient: breakfast, a 24-hour front desk and housekeeping save time. For five nights or more, and for a trip with children, an apartment with a kitchen is the better value. The compromise is an aparthotel, which has both a kitchen and hotel service.
