Minsk
Minsk is a city of striking contrasts. Vokzalnaya Square is home to monuments of Soviet Classicism — the 12-storey "Minsk Gates". Along Nezavisimosti Avenue you'll see buildings in the Stalinist Empire style. And just two blocks away await the colourful houses of the Trinity Suburb and the cellars of the Upper Town with their own breweries. From Moscow you can get here in 7 hours on the Lastochka train or in an hour and a half by plane. It's a great option for a weekend trip: it's easy to plan a walking route and manage without a car.
Upper Town and Trinity Suburb: the Historic Centre by Nyamiha Metro Station
From Nyamiha station it’s a 250-metre walk to the Trinity Suburb across a pedestrian bridge.
On the left bank of the Svislach stand colourful 19th-century houses. Here you’ll also find the Maksim Bahdanovich Literary Museum and the Museum of Belarusian Literature. Just nearby is the Island of Tears with its memorial to soldiers who served in Afghanistan.
On the right bank you’ll come across Freedom Square and the Upper Town. This is where the 2003 Town Hall stands — rebuilt on the site of the one that had been lost. The neighbourhood also features the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul and the Church of Saint Joseph.
In the evening, head down to the cellar of “Rakauski Brovar” (10 Vitebskaya Street). It has its own brewery and serves draniki with machanka.
For Belarusian classics, drop by “Vasilki” — they offer five kinds of draniki. Another fitting spot is “Kamyanitsa”.
From the railway station to the Upper Town is a 25-minute walk, or two stops on the metro.
Summer in Minsk: the Cycle Path along the Svislach and VULITSA EZHA
Summers here are mild: daytime temperatures reach +22 °C, and in the evenings you can settle in on open-air terraces. On 20–21 June the Botanical Garden hosts the VULITSA EZHA food festival — one of the biggest weekends of the year.
A 27-kilometre cycle path runs right across the city — from the Drazdy Reservoir to Loshytsa Park. Take a ride along it: the route takes about half a day, and at the end an apple orchard is waiting.
In May the city comes alive with folk festivities and concerts. In winter, visitors are welcomed by fairs in the Upper Town and premieres at the Bolshoi Theatre of Opera and Ballet. At the same time, hotel prices from December to February are noticeably lower than in summer.

If you're visiting Minsk for the first time and want to feel the atmosphere of the old town, pick the Upper Town. It sits right next to Trinity Suburb. If you plan to attend a concert or a match, stay on Pobediteley Avenue — close to Minsk-Arena.
For short business trips, the most convenient option is the blocks around the railway station and Independence Square: from there you can walk to Independence Avenue and GUM.
If you're traveling with family and plan to spend a week in the city, or you simply want to save money, take a look at the residential districts — Grushevka, Vesnyanka, Kamennaya Gorka. They are 20–30 minutes from the center by metro, with rates starting at 2,824 ₽.
The main currency for payments in Minsk is the Belarusian ruble (BYN). Many hotels will accept a Mir card. ATMs also accept Mir cards, though not all of them.
To avoid hassle, it's best to exchange some money for Belarusian rubles in advance or bring cash US dollars. You'll find exchange offices in banks, at Minsk-2 airport and in major shopping malls.
The most suitable period is the tourist season, which runs from May to October. The weather is comfortable: air temperatures stay around +22…+24 °C, with little precipitation — ideal for strolling through city parks and along the Svislach River.
Winter in Minsk is often mild (around −4 °C on average) and not very snowy. That climate works well for trips before New Year's, when you can catch the Christmas market on Oktyabrskaya Square.
The quietest months for a visit are November and March. The tourist flow drops and hotel prices fall to their lowest.
If you're spending 2–3 nights in the city center, a hotel is the more practical choice. Breakfast, a working front desk and regular housekeeping save you time.
If your trip will last longer (five nights or more), or you're traveling with family and kids, an apartment with a kitchen is the better option. You'll spend less on accommodation and can cook for yourself instead of paying for café and restaurant meals.
