Hotels in Penza

The historic center is a handful of blocks around Lenin Square, where the pedestrian stretch of Moskovskaya Street runs for more than a kilometer and is lined with cafe terraces the whole way. From here it is a walk to the Lunacharsky Drama Theatre, the Savitsky Art Gallery, the Savior Cathedral and the Museum of One Painting, and a quarter of an hour gets you down to the Sura embankment and the First Settler monument. The area works equally well for a car-free weekend and for a business trip: the city administration is a couple of minutes away.

A pool and a bathhouse in Penza are not only an out-of-town affair: several city hotels run their own water area, and pedestrian Moskovskaya Street is ten to fifteen minutes away. This kind of stay helps in winter and through the long shoulder season, when it is too cold to walk the embankment but too early to head back to the room. A few complexes stand right on the Sura, with access to the water and fishing.

When a trip stretches to a week or more, a studio in a new building usually beats a hotel room: the kitchen settles the question of breakfasts and dinners, and the washing machine settles the question of how much to pack. The main short-stay rental addresses in Penza are the Triumf towers on Pushkina and Plekhanova streets, almost in the center, and the Norwood complex on Izmailova Street in the GPZ district. From Triumf it is about a fifteen-minute walk to the drama theatre; from Norwood, a short ride into the center.

Penza's factories and business centers are concentrated in the western part of the city — in Arbekovo and along Prospekt Stroiteley, with quick access to the bypass and the M-5 highway. Lenin Square is 15–20 minutes away by public transport, and you avoid the morning jams heading out of the center. Hotels in this belt almost always have their own parking and meeting rooms — exactly what three or four working days call for.

Akhuny is Penza's pine-covered southeastern edge and its historic health-resort area: just eight kilometers from Lenin Square, yet it feels like deep forest. There is mineral water, health treatments, pools and spa programs here, so people come for a week or two rather than a couple of days. Choose Akhuny if quiet and clean air come first and the museums downtown are a pleasant addition rather than the point of the trip.

Penza sits conveniently on the route: about six hundred kilometers from Moscow, and many travelers stop here for exactly one night before a long haul. Hotels near the Penza-1 train station, along Zavodskoe Shosse and by the airport are built for that scenario — parking, late check-in and early check-out. If you would rather not drive into the city at all, there are roadside complexes beyond the city limits, right on the highway towards Tambov.

Half an hour out of the city in the Moscow direction stands the Legenda sculpture park, and around it are forest complexes by the ponds with pools, a beach and a restaurant. This is the option for a family weekend, when the city program is secondary and you have a car. It is also a convenient base for day trips to Tarkhany and Narovchat — there is no need to spend the night out in the region for those.

The city's most affordable segment is two-star mini-hotels, small hotels and guest houses in residential districts: Ternovka, Zapadnaya Polyana, around Kizhevatova Street and the northern part of town. Wi-Fi and parking are available almost everywhere, while breakfast is most often charged separately. Getting downtown from these areas usually means one or two transfers, or twenty minutes on public transport — a fair trade for the savings if you have come to work or simply to sleep.
