The center here is compact: it is about 2.5 km from the railway station to the port on Valaamskaya Street — a 25–30 minute walk at an easy pace past early 20th-century Finnish Art Nouveau and the buildings of Johan Ahrenberg. It is a convenient base for both of the main excursions: the "Ruskeala Express" leaves from the same station where the "Lastochka" arrives, and the pier for the "Meteor" hydrofoils to Valaam is about fifteen minutes' walk from the station. This is the option for travelers who arrive without a car and want everything within walking distance.

An apartment helps when you are traveling as a group or with children: you get your own kitchen and can have breakfast before an early "Meteor" instead of waiting for a restaurant to open. These places are concentrated on Karelskaya, Kirova, Lenina and Sovetskaya streets — a few minutes on foot from the station, the shops and the port. A good choice for a longer trip that takes in Ruskeala, Valaam and walks around the old town.

The most economical format in town is the small hotels and guest houses on Karelskaya, Bondareva and Fabrichnaya streets. The rooms are simple, but the station and the port are still an easy walk away, and what you save goes toward tickets for the retro train and the "Meteor". A sensible choice if you are spending a night or two in Sortavala between excursions and only using the room to sleep.

Four to six kilometers from the center — along the Helyulskoye highway and in the villages of Rantue and Lamberg — stand resorts with saunas, restaurants and playgrounds: the countryside format without a long drive. Helyulya sits on the northern edge of town, about half an hour by car from Ruskeala Mountain Park; from Rantue and Lamberg, further south on the Ladoga shore, the drive takes about forty minutes. This format works for families and groups who have a car.

A house of your own with a sauna and direct access to the water is exactly what people come to Karelia for over several days: fishing in the morning, a walk along the shore in the afternoon, steam and a barbecue in the evening. Such cottages are scattered around the bays near town and along the eastern shore of Ladoga, anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour by car from the center. A good fit for a group of friends or two families who want to live at their own pace rather than on a hotel's schedule.

The Ladoga Skerries are a labyrinth of rocky islands in the northwest of the lake, a national park since 2017; wooden farmsteads with saunas over the water and boat docks are tucked away along its shores. The nearest towns are 10 to 30 kilometers away and public transport runs rarely — a car is essential. In return you get silence, rock right outside the door and the views people come to the skerries for.

Sortavala's premium format is the estates right on the water, with a private beach, a spa and a restaurant, where you do not have to go anywhere to make a day feel complete. They stand in quiet bays such as Niemelyanhovi and even on islands, so the view from the window is part of the program here, alongside Valaam and Ruskeala. Places like these are usually booked for a long stay or a romantic weekend for two.

Ruskeala lies roughly 30 kilometers north of Sortavala, and staying near the park solves the main problem: you can reach the Marble Canyon as it opens, ahead of the buses and the "Ruskeala Express". The Ahinkoski waterfalls are on the same road, so accommodation along the Sortavala highway is easy to combine with both stops. A car is a must here, but the morning in the canyon is yours before the main groups arrive.
