Hotels in Sudak

Sudak Bay stretches for about a kilometre and a half, and almost everything right by the water sits on Naberezhnaya Street and the lanes running off it. From here it's a couple of minutes to the beach, with a café-lined promenade nearby and the climb up to the Genoese Fortress. The format is mostly self-catering — flats with kitchens and small guest houses rather than classic hotels. Choose this area if you're coming for a few days without a car and want to step straight out onto the seafront.

Uchiteley, Rykova and Gul-Tepe streets climb from the sea up towards the vineyards: it's a fifteen-to-twenty-minute walk to the beach, but it's quieter, parking is easier and prices are noticeably lower than on the seafront. The market and the bus station are close by, and the upper streets look out over the fortress. This is the pick for a long holiday, a trip with children or one by car — when the day starts not with the sea but with breakfast in the courtyard.

Large resort complexes were never built in Sudak: the top end here means a handful of three-star hotels with a restaurant and aparthotel-style stays with a spa area, not chain high-rises on the seafront. What plenty of the smaller properties do have is a pool, a sauna and their own leafy grounds, so you can swim and eat without leaving the gate. This is the choice for an unhurried break, when you'd rather not depend on the weather at the beach.

The 14th-century Genoese Fortress stands on Fortress Hill in the western part of town — Sudak's main landmark and one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Crimea. The streets at its foot and along Cypress Alley put you within walking distance of the sea, the old town with its Lutheran church, and the path up to the walls. A good option if you're here to walk as well as swim: you can make the climb to the fortress before the midday heat sets in.

Novy Svet lies seven kilometres from Sudak, over the pass: a juniper grove, a string of coves, the Golitsyn Trail cut into the cliffs and an old winery with a wine museum. The village is tiny, with places to stay clustered around Lev Golitsyn Street and the seafront, so the sea and the start of the trail are close from anywhere. Worth basing yourself here if you want quiet and walks instead of a resort promenade — people get into Sudak itself by minibus or car.

This Sudak selection also takes in coastal villages on either side of town — Morskoye on the road to Alushta and Kurortnoye, already in the Feodosia district. People go there for a calm beach without the resort crowds: the accommodation is mostly privately run, with a pool or a shaded gazebo in the yard and parking by the gate. Kurortnoye is a handy base for Karadag and Koktebel, while the road from Sudak leads to Cape Meganom and Kapsel Bay. It's an option for a trip by car: shops and cafés are close at hand, though the choice is far more modest than in town.
