Hotels in Yalta

Central Yalta means the Lenin Embankment, Lenin Square and Primorsky Park all within walking distance, plus the transport hub where minibuses set off along the coast in every direction. Accommodation here is mostly urban: small three-star hotels and unmarked guest houses on the blocks around Roosevelt and Chekhov streets, a few minutes' walk from the water. It suits people visiting the South Coast for the first time and arriving without a car — restaurants, walks and excursions all start at the doorstep. Keep in mind that the embankment gets crowded in the evening; the side streets a couple of blocks uphill are calmer.

West and east of the embankment the city meets the water along its beaches: from Gagarin Primorsky Park and onward past Massandra, where converted boathouses stand right at the water's edge. This is where people stay who care more about a five-minute walk down to the sea than about strolling between cafés: some of the hotels have their own stretch of beach and a pool on the grounds. In summer it's the easiest option with children, but in the off-season it's worth checking whether your choice is open — the seasonal boathouses by the water close for winter.

A chain of sanatoriums lines Alupkinskoye Highway through Koreiz and Gaspra: old parks, paths down to the sea, climate-therapy programmes. The Yusupov Palace and the Swallow's Nest are close by, so the days between treatments fill up easily with walks. These specialised sanatoriums take guests year-round, which makes them a workable choice for the off-season, when the beach is no longer the point of the trip.

From Kurpaty to Opolznevoye the coast is lined with resort complexes built so that guests never need to leave the grounds: private gardens and beaches, pools, multi-level spas, medical centres, and at the largest of them a water park. This is the most expensive format on the South Coast and also the most carefree — meals, entertainment and treatments are all on site, and going into town is optional. Take this route if you're travelling as a couple or a family for full service rather than for touring the villages.

West of Yalta, in Alupka and Simeiz, the pace is noticeably calmer: quiet streets near the sea, the Vorontsov Palace with its park, Diva Rock above Blue Bay. Accommodation here means small hotels and guest houses, often with a pool in the yard and a view of Ai-Petri. It works for families and for anyone coming for the palaces and the history rather than the evening embankment — central Yalta is about half an hour away by minibus.

East of Yalta lies Massandra with its winery, then Gurzuf between Ayu-Dag and the vineyards, and beyond that the bay at Partenit. People come here for a quiet beach holiday: small coves, old lanes, little boutique hotels and guest houses instead of large blocks. A good choice for a second trip to the South Coast, once the Yalta embankment is familiar ground.

If the trip is about the sea, the embankment and day trips, resort infrastructure is barely needed — then a guest house or mini-hotel in town makes more sense. The most affordable accommodation in Yalta is a few rooms in a private house on the blocks around Sverdlov and Lomonosov streets: no restaurant or pool, but the sea and the bus station are within walking distance. That's convenient purely for sleeping between forays along the coast, with breakfast and dinner in the city's cafés.

The velvet season on the South Coast runs from mid-August to the end of September: the sea is still warm, there are fewer tourists, and accommodation costs less than in July. After that, from November through March, what stays in service are the city hotels in the centre, the large complexes and the sanatoriums, and the way to choose between them is by whether there's a pool, sauna and spa inside — so the holiday doesn't depend on the weather. Small guest houses and the boathouses by the water are mostly closed at that time of year.
