The center stretches from the railway station and the port along the sea to the Desantnikov Embankment: the Aivazovsky gallery and fountain, the Genoese fortress of Kaffa, the fine-pebble Kameshki beach. There is no sand here — for that you head north — but museums, cafes and the promenade are all within walking distance, and you never have to think about a taxi in the evening. This location suits travelers who come for the city and its history, not only for the sea.
Five to seven kilometers north of the center a long sandy strip begins — Kamyshovaya Balka and the village of Beregovoye. The hotels line Kerchenskoye Highway and Kamyshovaya, Peschanaya and Vesennyaya streets, and the sea, with its gentle entry and shallow water, is right on the doorstep; that is exactly what brings families with children here. The Desantnikov Embankment is 15–20 minutes away by minibus, but shops and everyday services in the cluster are sparse, so most errands still mean a trip into town.
The most affordable segment is unrated guest houses and small hotels: a handful of rooms, a yard with a barbecue, the owners on site. You will find them both in town, in the blocks between the railway station and the old quarter, and on the beach side in Beregovoye — and the difference between the two is usually not the price but what sits outside your window, the fortress or the sand. How much you save depends most of all on the month: in May and September the same house costs noticeably less than at the height of July.
Properties with full-service facilities are few in Feodosia: a pool, sauna, spa and an on-site restaurant are found mainly at the larger hotels in the center and in the northern districts along Chernomorskaya Embankment. This format earns its keep in the shoulder months and in the velvet season, when the sea is already too cool for swimming but the holiday is far from over. It is the choice for anyone willing to pay for a step above average and reluctant to leave the grounds every time they want a meal or a swim.
Koktebel is a separate resort village about twenty kilometers south of Feodosia, right at the foot of Kara-Dag. Accommodation lines Lenina Street, the main artery with its cafes, market and promenade, and the quiet lanes just off it; boat trips to the Golden Gate rock and walking tours into the nature reserve set off from here. The Voloshin house-museum, Tikhaya Bay and the winery are all close by, so the evenings are not only about the beach. Minibuses run regularly between Koktebel and Feodosia, so you can base yourself here and go into the city for the day.
Kurortnoye is a small village at the foot of Kara-Dag, right on the edge of the nature reserve, with Lisya Bay a few kilometers to the south. There are not many places to stay, and a good share of them are sanatoriums and health resorts with a medical program, so people come here for treatment and quiet rather than for entertainment. The reserve is closer from here than from Koktebel and there are usually fewer tourists — the unhurried pace appeals to families with children and to anyone staying for a longer while.
Two quiet villages sit at either end of the coastal cluster: Primorsky continues the beach strip north of Beregovoye, while Ordzhonikidze tucks itself into Dvuyakornaya Bay south of the city. There are noticeably fewer people here than on the central beaches, and the sea is a couple of minutes from the front steps; the trade-off is that museums, restaurants and the Desantnikov Embankment all take a journey to reach. A good fit if the trip is about sea and quiet, with the city saved for a day out or two.
The range is wide. The lower end is made up of unrated guest houses and small hotels, the middle of three-star city hotels, and the top of four-star properties with a pool and spa along with the larger health resorts. North of the center, around Kamyshovaya Balka and the village of Beregovoye, five to seven kilometers from the old town. A long sandy strip with a gentle entry into the sea runs along there, and almost the entire beach hotel cluster is lined up beside it. There is no sand in the center itself: what you get is the fine-pebble Kameshki beach and small stretches by the Desantnikov Embankment.
Koktebel or Kurortnoye are the most convenient — both villages sit right next to the nature reserve. Boat trips to the Golden Gate rock and group walking tours leave from Koktebel, while Kurortnoye is closer still to Kara-Dag and usually has fewer tourists.
The swimming season holds from late May through September, with July and August the peak for both crowds and prices. The best balance of weather and cost comes in the velvet season in September: the water is still warm and the beaches have already emptied out.
