Feodosia
Feodosia is a completely different Crimea. Unlike the Southern Coast, here you'll find wide sand-and-shell beaches with a gentle entry into the sea and none of the tiring mountain switchbacks. This is a city where cultural life buzzes just ten minutes from the water's edge. Walk the streets where Aivazovsky worked, and touch antiquity: Feodosia has been keeping its chronicles for 2,600 years — ever since Greeks from Miletus founded ancient Kaffa here.
From the Rotunda to St. Constantine’s Tower: The City’s Main Route
A walk along Aivazovsky Avenue and Desantnikov Embankment is the best way to get acquainted with Feodosia. Along the 2–3 kilometer route you’ll find the city’s most picturesque spots: the Rotunda, the Aivazovsky Fountain (built in 1888 with the artist’s own funds from his personal Subash spring), and the Moorish Stamboli Villa (1914). Don’t miss the monument to Afanasy Nikitin: the great Tver merchant stopped in Kaffa (the ancient name of Feodosia) in 1474 on his way back from his famous journey.
On Galereynaya Street, it’s worth lingering for two landmark places: the Aivazovsky Art Gallery, which the master opened at his own home back in 1880, and the Alexander Grin Literary Museum, where the writer lived and worked from 1924 to 1929.
End the walk in the Karantin district. Fragments of the 14th-century Genoese fortress walls have been preserved here: they reach 11 meters in height and stretch nearly half a kilometer in total length. On the way back to the city center, you’ll see St. Constantine’s Tower, set inside Yubileyny Park.
Seasons and Day Trips
In August, temperatures peak: up to +29 °C during the day, up to +22 °C at night, and the water warms to +26 °C. At this time, however, the beaches are crowded and prices are high.
September is the “velvet” season, the golden middle: temperatures hold at a comfortable +24 °C, the sea stays warm, and the crowds of holidaymakers thin out.
You can swim with confidence from mid-June onward, and the season wraps up in early October. In winter, daytime temperatures sit around +7 °C — this is when people come for the quiet and the museums.
From Feodosia, it’s easy to set out on day trips:
- to Koktebel — 30–40 minutes by minibus; from there you can take a boat to the “Golden Gate” rock in the Karadag Nature Reserve;
- to Sudak with its Genoese Fortress and to Novy Svet — about an hour.

The range is wide. The lower end is made up of unrated guest houses and small hotels, the middle of three-star city hotels, and the top of four-star properties with a pool and spa along with the larger health resorts. Rates in July and August are noticeably higher than in May and September, and the entry level in Kurortnoye is traditionally higher than in Beregovoye or Koktebel. North of the center, around Kamyshovaya Balka and the village of Beregovoye, five to seven kilometers from the old town. A long sandy strip with a gentle entry into the sea runs along there, and almost the entire beach hotel cluster is lined up beside it. There is no sand in the center itself: what you get is the fine-pebble Kameshki beach and small stretches by the Desantnikov Embankment.
Koktebel or Kurortnoye are the most convenient — both villages sit right next to the nature reserve. Boat trips to the Golden Gate rock and group walking tours leave from Koktebel, while Kurortnoye is closer still to Kara-Dag and usually has fewer tourists.
The swimming season holds from late May through September, with July and August the peak for both crowds and prices. The best balance of weather and cost comes in the velvet season in September: the water is still warm and the beaches have already emptied out.
