The city has two airports. Passenger flights use Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny (Barataevka) in the south-west, roughly ten to twelve kilometres from the historic centre: a taxi takes twenty to thirty minutes, or up to forty at rush hour. Ulyanovsk-Vostochny is in Zavolzhye next to Aviastar and mainly handles cargo flights; if you're arriving on a passenger flight and your hotel is in Novy Gorod, allow time for the trip across the Presidential Bridge.

The best time for walks, museums and getting to know the Volga is from mid-April to mid-August: the weather is mild and sunny and the river boats are running. Winter is cold and snowy, and demand for hotels is lower then, which actually makes it convenient for business trips to Zavolzhye.
